Obituary

Zora Rose Horodnic, formerly of Shenango Township, passed away at 6:50 p.m. Thursday, January 26, 2017, in Hospitality Care Center, Hermitage. She was 94.

Mrs. Horodnic was born October 7, 1922, in Sharon, a daughter of Ivan and Mildred Gorichky. She was a lifelong area resident and attended school in Farrell.

During WW II, Rose worked at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. and retired from the Mercer County Courthouse where she worked in the Recorder's Office for many years.

She was a founding member of Church of the Good Shepherd, West Middlesex, and its Altar and Rosary Society where she served as an officer.

Rose was a member and vice president of United Steelworkers of America, Local # 7800 and was the first woman in Mercer County to be elected to the Central Labor Committee. She was a member of the Mercer County Democratic Woman's Committee and served as a Mercer County Committeewoman.

She was very proud of the fact that she was invited to Jimmy Carter's inauguration and that Walter Cronkite called her on election night for the results in Mercer County.

Rose served on the board of directors of the Penn Star Credit Union for 34 years and was a member of the Hickory VFW Ladies Auxiliary where she held the office of Senior Vice-President.

Her husband, Michael Horodnic, whom she married March 15, 1946 in St. Adalbert's Church, Farrell, passed away July 12, 2004.

Surviving are: three daughters, Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Fabrizio and her husband James, Atco, NJ; Michaelene R. Matijevic and her husband Momcilo, Shenango Township; and Diane L. Shore and her husband Stephen, Erie, PA; eight grandchildren, Kristi Moritz and her husband Brian; Nick, Lyndi and Ashlie Fabrizio; Sabrina Bubeck and her husband Lawrence; Monica Schell and her husband William; Michael Shore and his wife Krista; and Adam Shore and his fiancé Mindy Medvec; and five great grandchildren, Karissa and Jefferey Moritz; Gabriella and Leila Bubeck; and Lilyana Rose Schell.

Besides her husband, Rose was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mildred "Mickey" Sisic; four brothers, Stephen, Frank, Ivan and Alex Gorichky; and a grandson, James "Zeke" Fabrizio.

Calling hours will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2017, in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.

Funeral Mass will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2017, in Church of the Good Shepherd, West Middlesex, with Rev. David Carter, parochial Vicar of St. Joseph Church, Sharon, officiating.

Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
