Obituary

William "Bill" F. Marks, a former longtime resident of Washington St., Farrell, passed away at 3:29 a.m. Tuesday, August 22, 2017, in St. John XXIII Home, Hermitage.  He was 97.

Mr. Marks was born July 13, 1920, in Farrell, a son of Ralph and Mary (Stone) Marks.  He was a lifelong Farrell resident and a 1938 graduate of Farrell High School.  Bill loved the city of Farrell and served the community in many capacities.  He became a Civil Defense Warden in Farrell during World War II and joined the Farrell Volunteer Fire Department and Fire Police in 1943, at the age of 23, and remained an active member for more than 65 years.  He served as a Farrell City Councilman for four terms and was the longest living member of the Farrell High School Booster Club. A loyal Farrell sports fan throughout his life, he chartered many bus trips to the out of town games.  Bill was employed years ago by Nehi Bottling, Farrell, and tended bar at the former Eagle Grille on Darr Avenue and later, for nearly 20 years, at the Hilltop Inn on Roemer Boulevard, both in Farrell.  He became the manager of the Italian Home, Farrell, in 1967 and retired from there in 1996.  During this thirty year span, Bill expanded the kitchen and established a backyard garden to supply produce for the club.  An avid bocce player, he also built the bocce courts and started many leagues and tournaments at the club.  In his honor, the Italian Home named the courts the William F. Marks Bocce Complex in November of 2014.

Bill was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell, where he served as an usher.

Surviving is a sister, Mary Lou Cimoric and her husband Thomas, Farrell; a sister-in-law, Amy Marks, also Farrell; and several loving nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ann Marks, who died as an infant; and Loretta Leonard; and five brothers, Frank, Carl, Ralph, Arthur and Edward Marks.

Special thanks to the staff of St. John XXIII Home and Sharon Regional Health System hospice workers for their exceptional care.
