Mr. William J. (Bill) Hartzell, 88, of New Bedford, Pulaski Township passed away peacefully in his home at 12:30 A.M. Saturday, June 9, 2012.
He was born July 28, 1923 in New Castle to the late Chester and Margaret Patton Hartzell.
Mr. Hartzell was a 1943 graduate of Eastbrook High School where he was senior class president.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from May 11, 1944 serving as an aviation metalsmith until his discharge on May 21, 1946.
He married Amelia C. 'Carrie' Raab on December 31, 1945 and she preceded him in death on February 25, 2009.
Upon discharge from the Navy he worked for thirty five years as a welder for the Youngstown Sheet & Tube company until the mill closed in the early 1980's. He also worked as a welder for the C.D. Ambrosia Coal & Construction Company both part and full time for twenty five years.
Bill was active with the Boy Scouts for over twenty years and he held numerous leadership positions from Scoutmaster to Council Executive Board member. He represented the Lawrence County Council as Scoutmaster at the 1960 National Jamboree at Colorado Springs, Colorado. His many years of service and contributions to scouting were recognized in 1978 when he received the prestigious Silver Beaver Award. Bills mentoring of youth extended beyond scouting, he was dedicated to passing on the tradition of hunting. He served as a Hunter Safety Instructor and as a NRA Assistant Rifle Marksmanship Instructor. Bill was active in Pulaski Township Life. He served as Master of the New Bedford Grange. He had been a member of the Pulaski Township Volunteer Fire Department and the Auxiliary Police Department. He served as chairman of the township zoning board. He was elected to the position of Township Auditor and was elected to two terms as a Pulaski Township Supervisor, serving twelve year!
s in that capacity. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and visits with his grandchildren. Bill was a member of St. James the Apostle Church in New Bedford.
He is survived by his son Tim Hartzell (Nancy) of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; his brother Donald G. Hartzell and his sister Jo Ruby, both of Pulaski Township; grandson John Adam Hartzell(Sarah) of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; granddaughter Laura Hartzell James(Matthew) of Walla Walla, Washington and five great grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister-in-law, Loretta Raab of New Castle.
In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Chester Hartzell Jr.
In keeping with Mr. Hartzell's wishes, funeral services will be private.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, 111 W. Falls St.
Entombment will be in Graceland Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted at cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
