William "Bill" Francis Harshman of Sharpsville passed away a
t 4:48 p.
m. Sunday, May 15, 2016, in the intensive care unit of Sharon Regional Health System, after an extended illness.
He was 87.
Mr. Harshman was born July 22, 1928, in West Middlesex, a son of Kenneth B. and Helen F. Lansdowne Harshman.
He attended Sharon High School and served with the Navy during WW II in the European Theater. During his tour of duty, he was in the audience twice at the Vatican in Italy to see Pope Pius XII.
Bill retired in 1984 from the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. where he was employed for 41 years.
Following his retirement, he became a baker and candy maker, which he gave to family and friends, earning the nickname "Candy Man."
He also enjoyed woodworking.
Bill was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Sharpsville.
A Free and Accepted Mason, he was a life member of Kedron Lodge #389, West Middlesex, Scottish Rite and Zem Zem Temple, Erie.
He was also a member of the American Legion, Post #299, Sharon; and the Reynolds VFW Post #7599.
Surviving are: his wife at home, the former Denise Margah, whom he married March 17, 1951; two daughters, Carol Phillips, Hermitage; and Patricia Dunham and her husband Don, Sharpsville; four grandchildren, Brad Phillips and his wife Tanya; Bethany Applegarth and her husband Jason; Maria Drogell and her husband Brian; and Tamara Dunham; 7 great grandchildren; a sister, Norma Millison, Sharon; and special friends, Gary Hall and David and Betty Pratt, all Sharpsville.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Joann Weber Stanton.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude PL, Memphis, TN 28105; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
