A funeral service will be held Wednesday for the Rev. William Jay Gill, Shenango Township. He passed away peacefully at 12:22 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after complications from a stroke he suffered Friday morning at his home. He was 72.
Pastor Jay, as he was known, was born Oct. 18, 1938, in Sharon, the oldest child of William J. and Marguerite Neyman Gill.
He was raised in Brookfield and was a 1956 graduate of Brookfield High School.
He served with the U.S. Marine Corps. Pastor Jay was a supervisor and general manager in the construction field for more than 40 years at many different sites along the eastern seaboard.
He studied at Duke University, Durham, N.C., and became a minister in 1996.
Rev. Gill served as the pastor at Old Salem United Methodist Church, Sugar Grove Township, and later at the United Methodist Church in Johnsonburg, Pa., for four years, retiring in 2007. He was a member of the West Middlesex United Methodist Church and attended I.H.S. Gospel Ministries, Hermitage.
Pastor Jay was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating and gardening. He was a loving and dedicated man who cherished his family and friends and loved preaching.
Surviving are: his wife, the former Rose Kathryne 'Kay' Meredith Wachter, whom he married April 17, 1993, in the West Middlesex United Methodist Church; a stepdaughter, Meredith Lynn Friedman and her husband Leonard S., Novi, Mich.; a stepson, William Howard Wachter, Kersey, Pa.; a sister, Janet Elaine Kettering, South Carolina; a brother, John D. Gill and his wife Lila, Brookfield; and four nieces and a nephew.
Besides his parents, Pastor Jay was preceded in death by his first wife of 20 years, the former Elli Palumbo.
