William C. "Willie" Hvizdak, 90, of Mahoning Township passed away on Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, in Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh.
He was born in Canonsburg, Pa., on Nov. 27, 1925, to the late George J. and Katherine Hudzik Hvizdak. William grew up during the depression in Youngstown, Ohio.
He proudly served in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific.
William was a self-employed carpenter and contractor for 60 years while raising his family on their farm in western Pennsylvania.
Creativity was his trademark, from handmade wooden ceilings to carved Japanese dragons. Later in his life, while visiting relatives in Slovakia, he joined craftsman in creating fabulous patterns of parquet wood flooring. Lending to the nickname "Hardwood Billy."
His hobbies included repairing, refinishing and selling antique furniture for many years. He enjoyed taking family fishing vacations in small towns in northern Canada, which held several fond memories.
William is survived by his five sons, William Hvizdak and his companion, Darla Elliott, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Dennis Hvizdak and his wife, Karen, of Edinburg, Richard Hvizdak of Pittsburgh, Perry Hvizdak of Edinburg and Rodney Hvizdak and his companion, Renee Rose, of Atlanta, Ga.; his sister, Rita Kravec of Youngstown; his brother, Joseph Hvizdak of Youngstown; his seven grandchildren; and his former wife, Concetta (LaVolpe) Hvizdak of North Miami, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George and Edward Hvizdak; two sisters, Viola Estock and Helen Kish; an infant daughter; a son, John Hvizdak in 1964; his granddaughter, Katie Hvizdak in 1997, and his daughter-in-law, Lee Ann Hvizdak in 2007.
Funeral services are private.
Interment will be in St. James Cemetery, Villa Maria.
