Walter Buchowski, 101, formerly of Shenango Township, passed away at 9:51 a.m. Thursday, August 2, 2018, in Clen-Moore Place, New Castle. Walter was born July 3, 1917, in Volant, PA, a son of the late Stanley and Anna Grata Buchowski. Walter, along with his four brothers, proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII from July 14, 1943, until his honorable discharge as a Staff Sargent on January 26, 1946. Walter fought in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was awarded: two Purple Hearts, the Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal - with 3 Bronze Stars and World War II Victory Medal.

Walter married the love of his life, the former Rose Misco on June 14, 1952, and she preceded him in death on January 18, 2004. He retired in 1985 from General Fireproofing, Youngstown, OH, where he worked as a professional finishing welder. Walter was a member of Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church, New Castle.

He had a very mechanical mind and loved to tinker. After retirement, Walter enjoyed reparing small engines for family and friends. At Clen-Moore Place he liked attending bingo games and tending to the vegetable gardens in the court yard. His cheerful, friendly, and easy- going personality brought joy to family, friends and everyone he would meet.

Surviving are: a daughter, Karen Greb, Pittsburgh; a son, Raymond B. Buchowski, New Castle; and his four grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, Walter was preceded in death by a daughter, Arlene DiFiore; three sisters and four brothers.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Clen-Moore Place for their exceptional kindness and care.

Calling hours will be 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday (8-5-18) and 10:30 to 11:10 a.m. Monday (8-6-18) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 111 W. Falls St., New Castle.

Mass of Christian Burial will be noon Monday at Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church, 1708 S. Jefferson St., New Castle, with Rev. Mark Swoger, as celebrant.

Interment will be in St. Nicholas Cemetery, New Castle.
