Walter E. Ames, 89, of the Commons of Green Briar assisted living facility in Boardman, Ohio, passed away the morning of Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014. Walter was a former resident of Mathews Way in New Castle. He was born Nov. 7, 1924, in Pittsburgh to the late Walter A. and Alice P. Parnell Ames. Walter was a member of the graduating class of 1943 at Union High School. He was drafted into the Navy on July 7, 1943, where he served aboard the USS Pennsylvania, until he was honorably discharge on Feb. 23, 1945. Walter married the former Carol E. Ward on June 24, 1969, and she preceded him in death on July 24, 2008. In order to insure a better life than that of a naval swabbee, he obtained a degree in wildlife conservation from Wyoming University and a master's degree in natural science from the University of Idaho. He also attended Westminster College, Youngstown College, Kent State University and West Virginia University's Biology Summer Camp. Walter taught a year at Moscow High School in Moscow, Idaho, and two years at Southeast High School in Portage County, Ohio. He retired from Poland High School in Poland, Ohio after teaching biology for 24 years. He was given the Teacher of The Year Award on May 20, 1976. Walter was a life member of the Wildlife Society, a former member of the American Mammalogy Society and the American Biology Teachers Association. Walter was a former member of Wesley United Methodist Church in New Castle. Together with Carol, his wonderful wife, they traveled extensively in North America. Walter also enjoyed spending his time hunting, fishing and gardening. He is survived by his brother, Samuel, and his sister-in-law, Helen Ames, of New Castle; a sister-in-law, Peggie Nagy of Boardman; and numerous nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carol; two brothers, George and Robert Ames; and two sisters, Ruth Rae and Dorothy Allshouse. In honoring Walter's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 111 W. Falls St., New Castle.
