Veronica "Vera" Hubicz, of South Mercer Avenue, Sharpsville, passed away peacefully at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at her residence. She was 91. Vera was born Jan. 13, 1924, in Oil City, Pa., a daughter of the late Frank and Katherine Wala Martyna. She was a 1942 graduate of Oil City High School. She received her nursing certificate in 1945 from Allegheny General Hospital School of Nursing. She also attended Youngstown State University. Vera began her nursing career at the former Sharon General Hospital, where she worked for 13 years. She later went to work at the former Shenango Valley Osteopathic Hospital, where she was supervisor of nursing for 26 years. She retired in 1984 after 40 years in the nursing field. Vera was a member of Church of Notre Dame and its Ave Maria Society. She also was a member of Keystone Nurses Association. She was a member and former secretary of AARP and served as a tour guide in her retirement. She was a former member of Mercer County Board of Mental Health. Her husband, John J. Hubicz, whom she married June 1, 1947, passed away Aug. 16, 1984. Surviving her are: two daughters, Dr. Bonnie Lehman and her husband, Jeffrey, Pittsburgh, and Janet Hubicz, Palm City, Fla.; three sons: John J. Hubicz III, Pittsburgh; Thomas Hubicz and his wife, Michelle, Dallastown, Pa.; and Robert Hubicz and his wife, Elizabeth, Nashville, Tenn.; and three grandchildren: James Bulsiewicz, Thomas Hubicz Jr. and Sarah Hubicz. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by: two sisters, Nellie Burke and Julia Entwistle, and three brothers: Joseph, Michael and Walter Martyna.
