Obituary

Vernie Alberta (Wise) Sliter Haag, 71, of Sharon, passed away following a courageous battle with cancer on Monday, January 04, 2021, in her home, surrounded by her family.

Vernie was born February 11, 1949, in Oil City, PA, a daughter of the late Walter Leroy and Ida Mae (Craft) Wise. She attended Oil City Jr. and Sr. High School.

As a person that always put others first, Vernie appropriately worked her entire life as a caregiver. For the last 15 years she volunteered her time as a prayer counselor for Crossing Paths TV Ministry with Don Reed. Sometimes, Vernie was referred to as an "End-Time" caregiver, to which several lives were saved by her words of encouragement. She also worked in the daycare business, where she acquired the name "Grandma Hunny." In her early years, she was employed at Grandview Nursing Home, in Oil City.

Vernie was a member of the Mount Carmel Tabernacle Church of Dempseytown, PA, until she relocated to the Sharon area and has been a current member of Cedar Avenue Bible Church in Sharon. She also participated in the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship of America.

She always looked forward to singing and sharing the gospel in numerous ways, including nursing homes throughout the area. Many will remember her for her baking and redecorating skills. She always loved spending time with family and friends, (especially in church), going fishing, attending auctions, going to yard sales and always looking for ways to bless others.

She is survived by two daughters, Lorraine (Alan) McDonough, of Vienna, OH, and Kacey (Kenneth) Scott, of Hermitage; a son, Richard (Viola) Sliter, of Warren, OH; two step-daughters, Sheila Haag Ottaviano, of Florida, and Melissa Haag Johnson, of Grove City, PA; eleven grandchildren, Amber McDonough, Tyffani (Nick) Eicher, Kenton Leroy Hanna, Jr., Cheyanne McDonough, Patrick McDonough, Christopher King, Matthew Summerfield, Kacey Lynn Sliter, Chelsey Scott, Cheyanne Johnson and Shane Surrena; eight great grandchildren; and three sisters, Pearl Cutwright, Eileen (William) Armstrong, all of Mercer, and Etta Irwin, of Sharon,

Also surviving is her former husband, James L. Haag, of Butler PA; two fur babies, cats Tips and Tums; along with devoted friends, Doretta Tarr, Paul Black, and lifetime BFF Janice Botts.

In addition to her parents, Vernie was preceded in death by a sister, Twila Ann Edwards; and her first husband, Richard Lee Oakes.

The family would like to thank all those who attended to, encouraged, prayed for and visited with loving kindness during Vernie's times of need.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

A memorial celebration will be at a later date.
