Obituary

Tony Spanos, 400 Patt Drive, Farrell, passed away peacefully of natural causes at 5:17 p.m. Monday (8-31-09) in Hospitality Care Center following an extended illness. He was 85.
He was born on August 24, 1924 in Farrell, Pa the son of Emanuel and Dionesia Lambros Spanos.
Mr. Spanos retired in 1980 from the former Sharon Transformer Division of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation where he had worked in the Z building as a machine operator. He was a union steward for the International Union of Electrical Workers during his employment at Westinghouse.
A decorated veteran of WWII, he served with the United State Army and was honorably discharged on February 16, 1946 with the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star, and the WWII Victory Medal.
Mr. Spanos was a member of St. Adalberts Church in Farrell where along with his wife he enjoyed helping with church fund raisers such as making Pierogi for many years.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, Farrell.
Over the years he enjoyed bowling, hunting, and his greatest joy was found while spending time with his family.
His wife of 63 years, the former Helen Gladysz whom he married on May 18th, 1946, survives at the residence.
Also surviving are his two sons, Michael A. Spanos and his wife Dr. Linda J. Spanos, Hermitage, and Mark A. Spanos and his wife Lynne Spanos of Sharon; two grandchildren Nicholas and Daniel Spanos, two grandchildren, Marc Masaros and Krista Richards, and two great grandchildren Jacob and Connor Richards.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Sugar Zappa, and one infant brother. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to St. Adalberts Church, 1035 Fruit Ave. Farrell, Pa.
Calling hours: The family will receive friends for a memorial dinner at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286 1233 Idaho Street, Farrell immediately following the funeral Mass on Friday.

Service: A Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday (9-4-09) at 11:00 a.m. in St. Adalbert Church, Farrell, with Rev. Daniel J. Kresinski, pastor, as celebrant.
Full military honors will be provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286 honor guard at the conclusion of the Mass.
