Thomas "TC" C. Skertic of Hermitage passed away peacefully at
11:53 a.m.
Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016, in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage. He was 93.
Mr. Skertic was born August 5, 1922, in Sharon, the second youngest of 11 children to Roko and Dora Skertic.
He was a graduate of Zelienople (PA) High School.
Tom was a Staff Sergeant with the US Army in the 849
th
Air Engineering Squadron and was a member of the 390
th
Bomb Group while serving in the European Theatre of Operations during WW II.
He was initially employed at the former Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation in Farrell and retired in 1985 from Penn Power where he worked as a mechanic for more than 35 years.
Following his retirement, he continued to work on his family and friends vehicles for many years and was always ready to lend a helping hand.
Tom was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Anthony's Church, Sharon, the Knights of Columbus and the Croatian Fraternal Union.
A decorated war veteran, he was a member of the Reynolds VFW, Post # 7599, Transfer; and the 390
th
Bomb Group Veterans Association.
TC enjoyed making wine with his nephews and playing the daily lottery. He loved to plant a garden each year, starting from seed in his basement, and gave his bountiful harvest to family and friends.
His wife of 45 years, the former Theresa M. Luin, whom he married September 8, 1951, died June 30, 1997.
Tom was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and father-in-law. He loved his family very much and made them his top priority in life, particularly his grandsons.
Surviving are: his daughter, Mary Frances Lombardi of West Middlesex, whom he and his wife adopted in June of 1962; three grandsons, Domenico Lombardi, Masury, OH; Luigi Lombardi, Hermitage; and Rocco Lombardi, Greenville; a former son-in-law, Louie Lombardi, Masury; a sister, Barbara Friedrich, Oxnard, CA; a sister-in-law, Sister M. Antoinette Luin, with the Daughters of Divine Charity, Akron, OH; several nieces and nephews, including Matthew, Gerard, Paul, Jimmy and John Skertic who were like sons to him; great nieces and nephews; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, all whom he loved dearly.
He also leaves four Godchildren who loved "Kum Tom" very much, David, Mary Beth and Jerome Jurenovich; and Diane Brezec; and special neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. John Hayes, who were always there for him.
Besides his parents and wife, Tom was preceded in death by five brothers, John, Matt, Steve and two who died at birth; and four sisters, Ann, Pauline, Mary and Josephine.
Tom's family would like to thank the staff of the cardio vascular unit and the doctors and nurses on the 6
th
floor of Sharon Regional Health System; the staff and doctors at Nugent Convalescent Home; Three Rivers and SRHE Hospice and Palliative Care; and McGonigle Ambulance Service for the wonderful care they gave Tom during his illness.
As suggested by the family, memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony Church, 804 Idaho St., Sharon, PA 16146.
