Obituary

Thomas Martin O'Brien, Sr., South Pymatuning Twp., passed away at 6:56 p.m. Tuesday June 7, 2011, one day short of his 64th birthday in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh.

Mr. O'Brien was born June 8, 1947 in Sharon a son the late John D. and Sophie Dobroski O'Brien.

He was a 1965 graduate of Brookfield High School and attended Youngstown State University.

Tom began his professional career as a carpenter more than forty years ago and retired in June of last year. Along with his brothers, Paul, Jim and Mike, he owned Rien Construction, formerly known as Maybrook Construction, Brookfield, Ohio, and served as vice-president.

He was highly respected for his integrity and honesty and his willingness to help others. Tom was a lifelong member of Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon; and a member of the Carpenters Union local # 268. His zest for life was contagious and will be remembered for his great gift of conversation. Tom was a ten year survivor of lung cancer, beating all odds with his personal determination and faith in God. He participated in the Relay for Life for many years and was generously supported by his family and friends. Tom was an avid sportsman and loved to hunt on his property in the Allegheny National Forest as well as the Western states. For the past several years, he still managed to travel to Montana to hunt on different occasions with his wife Diane and two sons, Keith and Bill. He was a master at gardening and taking care of his orchards. He prided himself with his fruitful harvests and shared his bounty with family and neighbors. Tom was involved with the Boy Scouts of Ameri!

ca when his son was a scout and taught a merit badge class on proper gun use while hunting. He also enjoyed golfing, collecting antique cars and was passionate about planning new projects at home and work. A true pleasure for Tom for the past ten years was spending time at his Lake Erie cottage with his wife. It was there that so many family gatherings and parties were celebrated. Tom was also very proud of his Irish heritage and enjoyed St. Patrick's Day and rooting for the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. He will be sadly missed by his loving family, devoted friends and countless business associates.

Surviving are: his wife at home, the former Diane Deter, whom he married August 25, 2001; three sons, Thomas O'Brien, Jr., Brookfield; Keith O'Brien and his wife Stacie, Hartford, Ohio; and William O'Brien and his wife Anna, Brookfield; three grandsons, Conner, Keagan and Will O'Brien; He also leaves five brothers, John O'Brien and his wife Sandee; James O'Brien and his wife Carole; Paul O'Brien and his wife Tina, all Brookfield; Michael O'Brien and his wife Anna Marie, Hartford; and Robert O'Brien and his wife Shirley, Brookfield; four sisters, Mary Kathleen 'Kitti' Hudson and her husband James, Sharon; Patricia Kovack and her husband Joseph, Hubbard, Ohio; Jennifer Bacik and her husband Dale, Apollo Beach, Florida; and Dorothy 'Dotti' Pepe and her husband Anthony, Hermitage; more than 100 nephews, nieces, great nieces and nephews; his father-in-law, Harry Deter, Greenville; his former wife, Jacqueline O'Brien, Brookfield; and his pet dog Lilly.

Besides his parents, Tom was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Frances Weber; two nieces, Stephanie and Jill O'Brien, who is also his Godchild; two nephews, Paul and Robbie O'Brien; his mother-in-law, Helen Deter and his beloved pet poodle, Obie, both whom passed away in May of this year.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the O'Brien Children Memorial Foundation, 33 Chestnut St., Sharon, PA 16146; or to the American Cancer Society.

Calling hours will be from 3-8 p.m. Friday (6-10-11) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday (6-11-11) in Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon, with the Rev. Henry Andrae, pastor, as celebrant. Everyone is asked to go directly to the church.

Interment: St. Mary's Cemetery, Hermitage.
