Thomas Muryl Boyd, 92, of Neshannock Twp. passed away peacefully at his residence Monday morning (3-28-16) surrounded by his family. He was born in Beaver Falls, PA on July 12, 1923 a son of the late Muryl J. and Mildred A. Thickett Boyd.
Tom was a 1941 graduate of Union High School. Upon graduation, he was employed by the Pennsylvania Engineering Corporation. On June 23, 1942 Tom enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in the 818 th Air Engineering Squadron stationed in the European Theatre of Operations during WWII. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sgt. on January 1, 1946 and was awarded numerous decorations for his service.
Tom married the love of his life, Ursula Mae McDowell on August 4, 1947, and she preceded him in death on September 20, 2013.
Thomas retired in 1985 from North American Rockwell, Axle Plant in New Castle; where he worked as a tool and dye maker for 35 years. He was an active member of St. Camillus Church, where he served as an Usher, Adult Alter Server and for several years volunteered as a C.Y.O basketball coach. He was a former member of both the Elks Lodge #69 and the Polish Falcons of New Castle. After his retirement, he became the Head of Buildings and Grounds at Hunter Woods Condo Association. Tom was a devoted family man who enjoyed 90 years of great health. His hobbies included golfing, bowling, cooking, and in his later years he enjoyed painting watercolor. Tom's artistic abilities extended to the cutting and polishing of rare stones, from which he would create beautiful jewelry.
Tom is survived by: two daughters, Kathleen (Tim) Glover and Sis (Eddie) Baxter, all of New Castle; one son, Thomas M. (Katy) Boyd Jr., Boulder, CO; four grandchildren, Patrick, Justun, Milissa "Lissie", and Michael Baxter; five great grandchildren, Dylan, Donovan, Braydan, Jack, and Max Baxter; and one niece, Roxanne Senchak, New Castle.
In addition to his parents and wife, Tom was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Alice Stoner.
Calling hours will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m Wednesday (3-30-16) at J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 111 W. Falls St. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites at 11:00 a.m. Thursday (3-31-16) in the funeral home. A procession will leave the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. for St. Camillus Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Sister Barbara Ann Johnston, a dear friend, and also to the nurses and social workers of Jameson Hospice for the wonderful care provided to Tom during his illness.
