Steve Worona, Sr., 2145 Orangeville Rd., Hermitage, passed away peacefully of natural causes at 11:05 a.m. Sunday, April 22, 2012, in his home. He was 88.
Mr. Worona was born February 14, 1924 in Herkimer, New York, a son of Ukrainian immigrants, Theodore and Annastazia Bylicia Worona.
His family relocated to this area in 1929 and he attended school in Brookfield, Ohio.
Since 1956 Steve was self-employed in the heating, air conditioning and sheet metal business.
He was secretary of the local Heating and Air Conditioning Association for many years and was president of the Sheet Metal, Roofing and Air Conditioning Contractors Association of PA in 1968.
A decorated veteran, he served as a Staff Sgt. In the 277th Field Artillery Battalion with General Patton's 3rd Army in the European Theater. Steve was involved in battles and campaigns of northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, Ardennes, Battle of the Bulge and Army of Occupation. His decorations and citations include numerous ribbons, two bronze stars and four battle stars.
Steve was an active member of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Sharon, where he served on the board, building committee's and sang in the choir. He was a life member of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks, Lodge 103, Sharon; and the VFW, Post 8860, Masury, Ohio. Steve enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and farming. He created a Christmas tree farm and enjoyed raising large crops of garlic.
Surviving are: his wife at home, the former Anne Kulczycki, whom he married June 11, 1955; his children, Carol Novosel and her husband Bill, Sharon; Steve Worona, Jr. and his wife Jean, Rocky Point, North Carolina; Vernon Worona and his wife Kim, Girard, Ohio; Donna Worona, Butler, PA; and Myron Worona and his wife Nancy, Hermitage; seven grandchildren, Steven, Jill, Lauren, Jeff, Myron II, Michael and Matthew; and a brother, John Worona, California.
Besides his parents, Steve was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michelle Worona; four brothers, Peter, Michael, Daniel and Myron Worona; and three sisters, Mary Stokey, Stella Bulick and Anna Glover.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2012, in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon. The B.P.O.E., Lodge 103, will conduct a prayer service at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
