Shirley L. O'Connor, 93, of New Castle, died peacefully Tuesday evening, September 3, 2024, at her home.

Mrs. O'Connor was born April 17, 1931, in Mahoningtown, a daughter of the late John P. and Julia Ann (Sullivan) Carlin. After graduating from Ne-Ca-Hi in 1949, she completed her Registered Nurse certification at St. Francis School of Nursing in New Castle.

As a young woman, Shirley worked as a private-duty registered nurse. She then became a licensed realtor and worked as an agent for Wilsher Realty, later Howard Hanna Realty.

Shirley was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Church, New Castle.

A loving wife and mother, Shirley dedicated her life to caring for her husband and children, and later found great joy in becoming a grandmother of 10.

Her husband, John M. O'Connor, whom she married on September 27, 1952, preceded her in death on March 31, 1998.

Shirley is survived by six children, Julia A. O'Connor (Rick Lambert), Terrebonne, OR, Dr. Mary O'Connor (Thomas McCormick), Jacksonville Beach, FL, J. Michael O'Connor (Margaret), Grass Lake, MI, Dr. J. Patrick O'Connor (Dr. Carol Lutz), J. Terrance "Teddy" O'Connor (Donna) and Cecilia "Ceci" O'Connor, all of New Castle; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Sidnam and Irene Glasstetter; and four brothers, Raymond, Thomas, John, and Leo "Dutch" Carlin.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday (9-6-24) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 111 W. Falls St., New Castle.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 9 a.m. Saturday (9-7-24) in St. Mary's Church, 124 N. Beaver St., with Rev. Aaron Kriss, as celebrant.

Interment: St. Mary's Cemetery, Union Twp.
