Sara "Sally" Winland, 93, of Hermitage, passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2024, in St. Paul's Senior Living Community in Greenville.
Sally was born on September 15, 1930, in Anoka, MN, the daughter of the late Lytle W. and Katharine (Barbor) Adams. She and her mother moved to Grove City after her father passed away, where she graduated from both Grove City High School and Grove City College, Class of 1952.
Sally married David A. Winland, her high school and college sweetheart, on July 24, 1954. They lived in Waco, TX, Oscoda, MI, and Erie, PA, during which time they had three sons together. They moved to Sharon in 1961 and raised their children there. David passed away on July 3, 1989. Sally remarried Robert Sopher, who she had dated briefly before meeting her first husband, in 1998. Robert died in 2016.
Sally was primarily a homemaker, but she worked as a grade school teacher before getting married and as a high school teacher when her sons were older. She taught social studies and history at Sharon High School. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Sharon, as well as the local chapter of PEO International, League of Women Voters, Oakwood Cemetery Association, and the Alumni Board of Grove City College. In addition to spending time with family, she enjoyed travel, reading, puzzles, and games.
Sally is survived by two of her sons, Mark Winland (Elizabeth), Houston, TX, and Bob Winland (Denise), Windsor, CT; six grandchildren, David Winland, Maggie Hooley (Danny), Katharine Winland (Chris Delp), Peter Winland (Helen Cai), Matt Winland (McKenzie), and Elizabeth Winland (Jack Heslin); and three great-grandchildren, Vivian, Georgia, and Aurelia.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Sally was preceded in death by one son, John Winland (Cindy); her sister, Elizabeth Hollister; and her brother, Richard Adams.
The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to St. Paul's Senior Living Community, 339 East Jamestown Rd., Greenville, PA 16125.
Calling hour will be 10 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday (05/04/2024) in the Wilson Parlor of First Presbyterian Church, 600 East State St., Sharon.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, in the Church.
Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Hermitage.
