Samuel B. "Ben" Tencer, 96, of New Castle passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 19, 2016.
Mr. Tencer was born in New Castle on January 24, 1920, a son of George and Elizabeth Fackelmann Tencer.
A lifelong area resident, he graduated from New Castle High School in 1938 and held a number of jobs until inducted into the US Army, where he served his country with distinction and valor. Ben was assigned to the 301st Infantry Regiment, 94th Division in Europe during World War II, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was awarded the Bronze Star for valor in combat and 2 Purple Hearts.
Following his return from the Service, he married the former Evelyn D. Barbarowicz of New Castle, who preceded him in death after 33 years of happy marriage.
He retired from the Ellwood City Forge in 1980 where he worked for many years as a machinist.
In 1983, he married the former Dorothy Douds Howley, also of New Castle, with whom he enjoyed 17 years of happy retirement until her death in 2000.
An avid fisherman most of his life, Ben also enjoyed bowling, gardening, and spending time with his family and friends. He was an active member of the Eintracht Singing Society.
Mr. Tencer was a member of St. Mary's Church.
He is survived by: two sons, Gary Tencer and his wife, Sharon of Durham, NC and Robert Tencer and his wife, Betty of Prescott, AZ; a step daughter, Kathleen Eckelberger and her husband Jim of Dallas, TX; two step sons, William Howley and his wife Kathy of New Castle; and George Howley of Slippery Rock; two sisters, Helen Korzek of Milford, MI; and Elizabeth Cwynar of Hubbard, OH. He also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, George, and Adam Tencer; and two sisters, Ann Calderwood and Mary Bucci.

Visitation will be held Saturday (4-23-16) from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 111 W. Falls St.
A procession will leave the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. for St. Mary's Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon by the Rev. Zachary Galiyas. Burial will be in St. Phillip's and James' Cemetery.
The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites following the committal service.
