Samuel 'Rusty' King, 914 Henry Street, Masury, Ohio, passed away peacefully at 6:35 a.m. on Monday (5-4-09) in St. Joseph Health Center, Warren, Ohio, following an extended illness. He was 80.
Mr. King was born on January 18, 1929 in Sharon the son of John Earl and Mary Elizabeth Bert King.
A veteran, he served with the United States Navy and was stationed in Japan.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8860, Masury, OH.
Sam was a member of the United Steel Workers Union and worked for more than 35 years at Shenango Furnace Inc., Sharpsville where he retired from in 1981.
A musician, Sam had a very popular Country Western band named Rusty King and the Rhythm Ramblers that entertained fans from the late 1950's through the 1970's. Leading the band on both bass and vocals, he was proud to have once played on the historic Grand Ole Opry stage in Nashville, Tennessee. He was a disc jockey for WPIC radio in the 1960's.
He enjoyed golf and in his early years he held a record for low score on nine holes at what is now known as the Hickory VFW Golf Course.
His wife, the former Mary J. Guelich whom he married on February 6, 1963, passed away on October 16, 2007.
He leaves his daughter Mary Beth Cunningham, Masury, Ohio, and two sons, John 'Rusty' King and his wife Roxanne, Hermitage; and Samuel J. King and his wife Sheila, Louisville, Ky; two step children, Jody Valentino, North Ridgeville, OH, and Joseph Kulnis, Lebanon Pa; eleven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, two sisters, Stella Patton of Baconton Ga., and Belva Radar, Greenville; and his brother, Patrick King, Greenville Pa and his former wife Winona Bacon King Kulnis.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Glenn 'Mickey' King and six brothers and six sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Hartland Hospice 3871 E. State St. Hermitage, PA 16148.
