Obituary

Ruth Louise Hipsley Mathieson, Raleigh, North Carolina, formerly of Service Ave., Sharon, passed away peacefully of natural causes at 11:02 p.m. Friday (3-31-2016) with her family at her side in Raleigh. She was 99.

She was born in Sharon on  December 9, 1916 a daughter of Thomas and Alice Hovis Locke.

She was a 1934 graduate of Sharon High School and received a certificate from the Sharon Business School.  She also studied at Youngstown State University.  After the death of her husband, she worked as a secretary at the former Sharon Westinghouse Electric Corporation in their purchasing department.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who enjoyed traveling throughout her life.

Her first husband Robert Ford Hipsley, whom she married May 6, 1938, passed away September 18, 1964.  She married Lester Mathieson on September 9, 1966, and he passed away February 2, 1980.

She is survived by a stepson, Skip Mathieson of Decatur, IL, and a son-in-law, Richard Skibo, Sharon, four grandchildren; Daniel Whirl, Hermitage, Brandon and Natalie Hartwick, Winston-Salem NC, Brooke and Erin Hartwick of Greensboro NC, Pachis and Jason Popielarczyk, Raleigh NC and five great grandchildren; Landon and Makayla Popielarczyk and Olivia, Isabella and Amelia Hartwick.

In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by her two daughters, Phyllis J. Whirl and Marjorie "Margie" J. Skibo and a grandson, Barret F. Whirl, her two sisters, Annabelle Heintz and Marquerite Persch, and a brother, Keith Locke.

The family suggests memorial contribution may be made to a hospice of their choice.

A private graveside service will be held Tuesday in Oakwood Cemetery, Hermitage. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State Street, Sharon.
