Obituary

Ruth E. Booth, long active in the community and her church, died Wednesday (Oct. 20, 2010) after a fall from a ladder at her home, 785 Koonce Rd., Hermitage. She was 77.

She was the wife of Dr. William A. Booth, a Sharon orthodontist, who died 10 years ago. They were married Aug. 18, 1956.

Mrs. Booth was a member of the Sharon Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. She was a president of the League of Women Voters and had arranged for local debates of political candidates for the last 10 to15 years. She had been treasurer of the Urban League Guild, a board member of the Community Child Care Center, a member of the Shenango River Watchers and took part in founding the local recycling center.

Ruth was a 50 year member of First Presbyterian Church, Sharon, serving as an elder and trustee and a member of the Women?s Interfaith Council.

She enjoyed visiting with her extended family, traveling to many parts of the world, was a regular walker and took part in the YMCA Zumba exercise program.

Ruth was known as a loving mother, gracious hostess and devoted community activist.

She had a variety of interests that extended well beyond her home area, lead by an appreciation for nature and an understanding and acceptance of all people.

Mrs. Booth was born May 3, 1933, in Girard, Ohio, the daughter of Raymond and Irma (Cunningham) Miller.

She graduated from Girard High School, attended Kent State University and graduated in 1956 from Ohio State University with a degree in dental hygiene. From 1956 to 1958 she was employed by the Ohio State College of Dentistry.

Surviving are four children, David A. Booth, Norristown, Pa.; Lynda A. Wittig, wife of Stephen Wittig, Ann Arbor, Mich.; Laura J. Booth, Washington, Va., and Joel Enoch, Marshall, Va., former husband and father of their children; Jana Whitmer, wife of Mark Whitmer, Waco, Tex. ; nine grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Marilyn Saare, San Diego, Calif.

Mrs. Booth also was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Marjorie Halfaker, San Diego, Calif.

The memorial service will be held on Friday, October 29, 11:00 a.m. at The First Presbyterian, Church 600 East State, Sharon, Pa.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday October 28, from 4-6pm at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home, 1090 E. State St., Sharon, Pa.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Salvation Army, Sharon Rotary Club, Nature Conservancy or a charity of your choice.
