Roy M. Johnson, 68, of Brookfield, OH, passed away on Wednesday, September 5, 2018, in Sharon Regional Medical Center.
Roy was born December 26, 1949, in Erie, PA, a son of Edwin and Margaret (Kubicki) Johnson. He was a graduate of Lakeview High School, Stoneboro, PA and attended Edinboro University for one year before transferring to Slippery Rock University where he earned his bachelor's degree in education. Roy later received his master's degree in special education from Clarion University and later matriculated at Ohio University.
Roy was employed at Polk Center (PA) for 10 years before he moved to Lancaster, Ohio where he worked for the Early Childhood Center/Forest Rose School. He was the supervisor and coordinator of the children's program there for 30 years before he retired. While working he forged many strong relationships with his fellow coworkers, Phyllis DeWitt, Wayne Kuglar, Becky Bailes and staff who supported him greatly in the past year.
Roy enjoyed cooking and baking, specializing in Eastern European cuisine. He had a beautiful tenor voice and often sang solos in the churches he attended. His favorite song to perform was "His Eye is on the Sparrow". He was a choir member at Fairfield Christian Church in Lancaster and leaves many dear friends there. As a teenager he traveled and performed with his uncle, ringmaster and magician Richard Johnson and Richard's family.
He is survived by his wife, the former Kathleen Thompson, whom he married on December 6, 1975; a son, Nicholas M. Johnson and his family Stephanie Musser March, Emma "EJ", Logan and Tanner, Hubbard, OH; his father Edwin Johnson, Grove City; a sister, Alice (Clair) Thompson, Mercer; two brothers, Lee (Cindy) Johnson, Grove City; and Mark Johnson, Toledo, OH; a sister-in-law, Lavina Elmore Johnson, Hubbard; a aunt, Loretta Kubicki Kovacs and her husband Janos Kovacs, Erie; and many beloved nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by his mother; a sister, Carol Johnson; a brother, Carl Johnson; and his dog, Gidget.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Calling hours will be 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday (09/10/2018) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 East State St., Sharon.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, in the funeral home with Rev. Aaron Lego, pastor of Grace Chapel, Hermitage, officiating.
Interment: St. John's Orthodox Cemetery, Hermitage.
