Obituary

Rose Marie (Balluch) Tatusko, 89, formerly a longtime resident of Farrell, passed away peacefully on Saturday December 28, 2024 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

Rose was born on August 5, 1935, to Joseph A. and Rose (Mickel) Balluch in Farrell, PA. After graduating from Farrell Area High School in 1953, she was employed by Bell Telephone as a telephone operator and later as a sales associate for AT&T after the merger of Bell Telephone with AT&T. She retired from Bell Telephone/AT&T in December 1987 after 28-and-a-half years of employment.

She married George Tatusko on September 4, 1954, and they were long-time residents of Farrell, PA. Rose moved to Penn Township, PA with her daughters in 2021 after the passing of her son, Kevin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George, a son Kevin, a brother, Joseph F., and her parents, Joseph A. and Rose Balluch.

She is survived by her sister, Julie Staul, of Hermitage, PA; her two daughters, Cindy (Kevin) Boniecki and Debbie (Bruce) Surmacz, all of Penn Township, PA; her six grandchildren, Marissa (Dave) Fico, Jeffrey (Heather) Surmacz, Kelsey Surmacz, Cassandra Surmacz (Tim Jockers, fiancée), Susan Surmacz, Kaitlyn Boniecki (Dylan Chambers, fiancée); and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Rose is also survived by a dear longtime family friend known as her "adopted son", Joe Shebeck, of Wheatland, PA. Rose also loved animals and had several "furry grandkids" that enjoyed laying by her side and sharing a snack.

Rose was a lifelong member of the Telephone Pioneers and a member of Sharon Elks Lodge No. 103, along with her husband. After her retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, family, and friends to various national parks and locations throughout Nevada, California, and Montana, as well as trips to Florida, Virginia, and the Baltimore area to visit family. She belonged to various card clubs with her sister, Julie, who met for lunch on a regular basis. She enjoyed baking cookies, pies, and kolache, especially during the holidays. Besides watching the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates, she enjoyed just sitting on the patio or deck and watching the birds - that were fed daily - or working crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed playing bingo and various other games/activities with her friends at Redstone Highlands in Greensburg, PA.

Her greatest pleasure was spending time with her grandchildren and family. She was known for taking the grandkids to Kraynak's in Hermitage, PA for shopping trips. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends and will always hold a special place in their hearts.

Rose was a longtime member of St. Ann's Church in Farrell. PA, until the parish merged with Our Lady of Fatima, where she continued as a member.

We would like to extend a special thank-you to the staff at Redstone Highlands in Greensburg, PA, especially to her main caregivers, Candy and Ashley, and to Donna, who encouraged her to participate in daily activities, for the love and warmth shown to Rose over the past year.   The kindness and love shown by the various doctors, nurses, and aides at Redstone Highlands was very much appreciated by her family. We also extend a special thank-you to Senior Helpers in Greensburg, PA, who aided her daughters while Rose was residing with them.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a contribution in memory of Rose be made to Redstone and mailed to Redstone Presbyterian Senior Care Office of Mission Support and Development, Suite 2800, 126 Mathews Street, Greensburg, PA 15601-9937; or Our Lady of Fatima Parish, 601 Roemer Blvd., Farrell, PA 16121; or Pet Friends, Inc., PO Box 484, Irwin, PA 15642.
