Obituary

Rose Ellen Mohan of Treasure Island, Florida, formerly of Sharon, passed away on Sunday, October 2nd, in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with her family by her side. She was 68.

Rose was born on September 9, 1948 in Sharon, Pennsylvania, a daughter of William J. and Helen J. Guzik Mohan.

An independent adventurer, she charted her own path through life, guided by her insatiable intellectual curiosity, uncompromising integrity, and an unwavering commitment to values she held dear, including fairness, equality, and justice.

Some folks collect coins, others stamps. Rose collected unique, deeply meaningful experiences, lifelong friendships, and academic degrees. A Bachelor of Science degree in education from Youngstown State University in 1970 was followed by a Master's degree and a Ph. D from Purdue University. In 1992, Rose earned her Juris Doctor degree from the San Juaquin College of Law in Fresno, California. Her lifelong commitment to education was a two-way street; Rose served as an Adjunct Professor at several academic institutions over the course of her career, including American University, California State University, Reedley Community College, and Sacramento City College.

Professionally, Rose made meaningful, lasting contributions in both the private and public sectors. She created the industry's first computerized national database of registered architects during her time working for the American Institute of Architects in Washington, DC. She drafted the winning architectural proposal for Fresno's renowned City Hall. Rose launched the San Juaquin Agricultural Law Review – the first Review of its kind - and served as its first Editor in Chief. The review circulates nationally to this day, currently publishing its 24th volume.

As a civil litigator in private practice in Fresno, California, Rose was a ferocious advocate for individuals subjected to discrimination and wrongful termination. Ultimately, Rose served the residents of the State of California as Assistant Chief Counsel on the Employment Advocacy and Prosecution Team within the States of Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Everywhere she went, fascinating people from all walks of life were drawn into her orbit. Simply put, Rose was interesting. She was cool. Like the literature she treasured (does anyone remember seeing Rose without at least one book in her hand?), the gourmet meals she painstakingly prepared for friends and family as often as possible, or the fine art and sculpture she both appreciated and collected, Rose valued quality over quantity. In a disposable world, she sought permanence, durability, and longevity. She cultivated deep, meaningful friendships that lasted her lifetime. Those relationships evolved into communities, and those communities exist to this day.

Rose's palmarès, both academic and professional, are well documented and universally acknowledged. However, her curriculum vitae are woefully incomplete without a full accounting of talents that, while perhaps not as widely known, are no less impressive.

Rose was an accomplished surgeon, called upon on countless occasions for emergency repairs to Dougie, the careworn stuffed puppy that is young Ryan Patrick's nighttime companion. She was easily the world's Most Thoughtful Gift-Giver. A gift from Rose was never off the rack, never anything easy, or common, or replaceable. Rather, she gifted priceless heirlooms or historical artifacts, often planning for special occasions decades in advance.

Despite the academic achievements and walls cluttered with advanced degrees in gilded frames, she was absolutely hopeless when it came to assembling jigsaw puzzles. She may have navigated her way through a successful career and a rich personal life, but actual navigation was another matter entirely. How she managed to relocate from one coast to another, and back again, before the advent of turn-by-turn satellite guidance is a mystery for the ages.

Above all, she loved her family and was fiercely proud of her Irish heritage. A journey to the coastal seaport of Sligo, Republic of Ireland, in the late 1990's to trace her late father's roots led to the discovery of blood relatives previously unknown to Mohan's on either side of the Atlantic. Rose's persistent sleuthing peeled back layer upon layer of mystery and intrigue, illuminating a thrilling account that, while too long for this space, would surely top the bestseller list if ever committed to print. That all Mohans are endowed with the Gift of Gab directly from the Blarney stone at birth is an established fact, and we're likely to share the tale over a pint of Guinness if asked.

Rose retired in April of 2016 and relocated to Florida. The launching pad for her next series of adventures was a beachfront paradise located on Treasure Island. Of course it was. Rose was a gem, one-of-a-kind, with brilliant facets brightly reflecting light and joy everywhere she went. She will always be loved, and will be missed dearly by us all.
