August 5, 1940 – April 9, 2019
Rose C. Callahan, 78, a longtime resident of Union Twp., passed away peacefully with her family at her side, Tuesday, April 9, 2019, as the noon church bells were ringing.
Mrs. Callahan was born August 5, 1940, in New Castle, a daughter of the late Jacob and Florence (Duddy) Bayuk. A lifelong area resident, she attended the former St. Joseph Parochial Grade School and New Castle High School.
Rose married her beloved husband, Edward J. Callahan in 1962, and he preceded her in death June 30, 2015. Her first husband, Ronald G. Fry, passed away September 19, 1960.
Rose retired in 2003 from Jameson Memorial Hospital, New Castle, where she worked as a nurse's aide for 23 years.
Rose was a member of St. Mary Church – Mary Mother of Hope Parish, New Castle.
A true matriarch, her greatest joy in life came from the love she shared with her family and the time she was able to spend with them, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed the occasional night out to spend time with friends while playing bingo.
Rose is survived by three daughters, Maureen McCarty, of Bristol, TN, Corinne (Joseph) Reed, of Ellwood City, and Suzanne (Al) Lakowski, of Arizona; five sons, Jeffrey (Kathy) Fry, of New Castle, Christopher (Renee) Fry, of Wampum, Edward Callahan, of Washington, Bryan (Susan) Callahan, of Morgantown, WV, and Matthew (Barbara) Callahan, of Wampum; a sister, Barbara Fair, of New Castle; two brothers, Jacob (Helen) Bayuk, of Hermitage, and Greg Bayuk, of Albuquerque, NM; 23 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Rose was preceded in death by three brothers, George, Roger and Regis Bayuk; and a grandson, Billy Fry.
Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday (4-15-19) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 111 W. Falls St., New Castle.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday (4-16-19) in St. Mary Church, 124 N. Beaver St., New Castle, with Rev. Victor J. Molka, Jr., as celebrant.
Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
