Roland Vermeire of Karl Road, Columbus, OH, formerly of Farrell, passed away of natural causes on Friday, October 05, 2012 in the Oakleaf Village assisted living home. He was 92. Mr. Vermeire was born July 1, 1920, in Farrell, PA, son of Charles and Rose DeBrakeleer Vermeire. He was a 1939 graduate of Farrell High School. In high school, Roland met his future wife, Dorothy Sipps. On July 16, 1941 Roland and Dorothy were married. In 1941, Roland was hired at the former Sharon Transformer Division of the Westinghouse Electric Corp. He was employed by Westinghouse for 43 years, retiring in 1982. During World War II, Roland served in the United States Navy from 1943 through 1946. During his time in the Navy, he was a Sonar operator on the USS WINGFIELD, DE #194. Roland was a loving father and a good natured friend to all that knew him. He faithfully attended and served as a Deacon at Calvary Baptist Church while living in Farrell. In 1973 Roland also began a life of ministry, receiving his license to preach from the Calvary Baptist Church. Roland enjoyed Christian fellowship and also loved to go camping. In his retirement, Roland combined these two loves, serving as the Chaplain at the Pymatuning State Park, Tuttle Point and Linesville campgrounds for 14 years. He was also active in several organizations throughout his life including the American Legion Post 160, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge 59 , and the VFW Post 5286, all Farrell. He was a Free and Accepted Mason and belonged to the former Sharon Lodge #250. Surviving Roland are his three children: Charlene (Vermeire) Specht and her husband Lawrence Specht of Rocky Mount NC, Gary Vermeire of Langhorne PA, and Daniel Vermeire and his wife Susan Vermeire of Westerville OH; 5 grandchildren, Andrew Specht and his wife Amber Specht; Laura (Specht) Julien and her husband Eric Julien; Stephen Specht; Jillian Vermeire; and Eric Vermeire; and 2 great grandchildren, Johnnie Specht and Mikialia Specht. Roland was preceded in death by his son Robert Vermeire who died as an infant, and his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Vermeire. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, the Wounded Warrior Project or the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
