Obituary

Robert C. Van Handel, Basil Drive, Hermitage, formerly of Bradenton, Fl, passed away of natural causes at 9:17 p.m. on Monday (8-23-10) in Cleveland Clinic Medical Center. He was 71.

He was born on February 27, 1939 in Paterson, NJ, the son of Clarence and Pearl Collins Van Handel.

He graduated from Passaic High School in Passaic, NJ.

An accomplished artist, he graduated from the Maryland Institute of Art and also studied at Johns Hopkins University, both Baltimore, Maryland.

A silk screen engraver, he owned and operated the former Practika Rotary Screen Engraving, Midland Park, NJ.

He attended Grace Chapel Community Church, Hermitage.

He was a member and past Fire Commissioner of the Rainbow Lakes Volunteer Fire Company, Denville, NJ, where he had volunteered for many years.

Mr. Van Handel enjoyed collecting and admiring antique cars. He also enjoyed painting, and being with his grandchildren.

A heart transplant recipient on September 13, 2003, he and his family were blessed with an additional seven years, during which he courageously fought through many major health issues with his beloved wife always by his side.

His wife the former Elizabeth J. DeVos whom he married on May 13, 1961, survives at the residence.

He is also survived by his daughter, Dawn E. Knisley and her husband Rex, Hermitage, his son Robert D. Van Handel, Sharpsville, and his four grandchildren, Kyle, Kelly, and Alex Knisley, all of Hermitage, and Amanda Van Handel, of Bradenton, his former daughter in law, Monica L. Van Handel, and his brother, Donald C. Van Handel and his wife Jean, of Whiting NJ.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in his memory to Rainbow Lakes Volunteer Fire Company, 1 Rainbow Trail, Denville, NJ 07834-3026.

Calling hours: 3:30 p.m. until the time of service on Saturday (8-28-10) in Grace Chapel Community Church, 4075 Lamor Rd, Hermitage.

Services: A Memorial Service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday (8-28-10) in the church with Rev. Louis N. Guariniello, brother in law of the deceased, and the Rev. Larry Haynes, Pastor of the church co officiating.

A memorial service will be held at a later date for Dale M. Van Luven of Brookfield. He passed away peacefully at 10:50 p.m. Sunday (9-12-10) in St. Joseph's Hospital, Warren, Ohio, after an extended illness. He was 62.

Mr. Van Luven was born Aug. 10, 1948, in North Dakota, a son of Donald and Dot Lynn 'Running Water Little Feather' Van Luven.

In his early years, he resided in Blackfeet, Mont., and Mountain Home, Idaho. He later resided in Pennsylvania and Brookfield. A veteran of the Vietnam conflict, he served in the Navy aboard the USS Waldron and as a foot soldier in Vietnam.

Dale was employed for several years as an independent contractor for the U.S. Postal Service. He also worked various jobs including Kaufmann's Warehouse; Dillon's Corp., Middlefield, Ohio; and Labor Ready, Warren and Youngstown. He was a member of the Blackfoot Sioux Nation.

As a Native American, he loved his heritage, his people and the area in which he was raised. Some of his interests included traveling, NASCAR, making and tooling handmade leather items, woodworking, horseback riding, fishing and hunting.

Dale had been actively involved in Point Man Ministries, a ministry that was started to assist Vietnam veterans and set them free. He was a Christian and through the years attended several Christian faith churches in the area.

Dale felt most fulfilled when he helped other veterans. He was a unique person with a wry sense of humor. He was caring toward his family and demonstrated love in action, believing there is no greater love than laying down his life for those he loved, and for his country. He will be sorely missed.

His wife, the former Beth O'Hare, whom he married Oct. 27, 1997, survives at home. He also leaves his daughter, Jennifer O'Hare Van Luven; his grandson, Isaak Becker; and a granddaughter, Gabrielle Becker. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
