Robert Ross Brown, 91, of New Castle went to be with the Lord the morning of Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Jameson Hospital. Mr. Brown was born Feb. 5, 1922, in Dubois, a son of the late Burleigh and Orpha Geist Brown. Bob attended the former Eastbrook High School and New Castle Business College. A decorated war veteran, he served with the Army's Company A, 49th Armored Infantry Battalion, 8th Armored Division during World War II from Dec. 12, 1942, to Feb. 15, 1946. He was the recipient of the Presidential Citation, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, ETO Medal with Three Battle Stars, Army of Occupation Medal, National Defense Medal and the Korean Service Medal with Three Battle Stars. Following his honorable discharge, Bob enlisted in the Army Reserves, where he served from 1946 to 1952, with one year of active duty in Korea from 1950 to 1951. He was employed at the Johnson Bronze Company from 1939 to 1980, and as a houseparent at the Youth Development Center from 1980 to 1987. Bob loved the Lord and was a born again Christian. He was an active church member throughout his life and was most recently a member and greeter at the Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church. He was a former member of the Faith Country Chapel for many years and a member and Sunday school teacher at the former Bethel Baptist Church. A Free and Accepted Mason, he was a Master Mason of Mahoning Lodge 243. He was also a member of the Consistory Legion of Honor and 32nd Degree of Ancient Scottish Rite Valley of New Castle. Bob enjoyed traveling, gardening and was a Pittsburgh Pirates fan. He was a fun-loving man and at the age of 90, learned how to kayak. His priorities while on this earth were God, family and country. His first wife, the former Hylda Mae Kitchingham, whom he married in London, England on Dec. 6, 1945, passed away June 24, 1985. He then married the former Florence Kildoo on Jan. 18, 1986, and she passed away June 16, 2010. Surviving are three daughters, Lydia Geiger of Cape Coral, Fla., and twins, Jan (Fred) Anderson of Harlansburg and Jill (Tom) McConahy of Volant; a son, Harry (Nancy) Brown of Milton, Fla.; five grandchildren, Darlene Brown of Geneva, Ohio, Matthew Geiger of Charleston, S.C., Jeremy Anderson of Seoul, South Korea, Krissy Correll of Milton, Fla., and Candra Smith of Georgetown, Ky.; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lillian Skunda of Columbus, Ohio and Vera Corbin Bell of Mercer; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and two wives, Bob was preceded in death by three brothers, Burleigh Brown Jr., Joseph E. Brown and Harry E. Brown; and a great-grandson, Gabriel Joshua Smith. Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, and an hour prior to services Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 111 W. Falls St., where a Masonic service will be 7 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. William Shaffer officiating. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery.
