Obituary

Richard G. Smith Sr., 84, of New Castle passed away peacefully of natural causes the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015, at Jameson Hospital. Richard was born Nov. 21, 1930, in New Castle, one of two sons born to Grant and Ethel Covert Smith. A lifelong area resident, he graduated from New Castle High School. He worked for the former Sharon Transformer division of the Westinghouse Electric Corp. and retired at the plant's closing in 1985. In his spare time, he enjoyed tending to his wife's cats, going to local flea markets and tinkering with automobiles. His wife, the former Pearl I. Fulmer, whom he married on his birthday Nov. 21, 1950, passed away on Jan. 20, 2004. He is survived by his daughter, Terry Lynn Smith and her longtime companion, Drew Mendler, of Edinburg; his son, Richard G. Smith and his wife, Catherine, of New Castle; two granddaughters, Cristin Smith and her fiancé, Luke Eidenmuller, of Philadelphia and Erica Graham and her husband, Curtis, of New Castle; his brother, Grant Smith and his wife, Leona, of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents. Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, in the chapel of the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 111 W. Falls St., where a service will be held at 1 p.m., with the Rev. John Wisman, pastor of Bethel United Brethren Church officiating. Interment will follow in Graceland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Lawrence County Humane Society, 602 Pearson St., New Castle, Pa., 16101.
