Obituary

Richard D. Smith, 195 Wakefield Dr., Sharpsville, Pa., and formerly of Bradenton, FL, passed away peacefully at 4:30 a.m. on Monday (3-16-09) at Saint Paul Homes, Greenville, of natural causes. He was 95.
He was born on November 22, 1913 in Roaring Spring, Pa., the son of Harvey A. and Lucy Gilliland Smith.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA, and later he earned his Masters degree from Penn State University.
Mr. Smith was employed in the Sharpsville School District from 1958 until 1976 as the director of Music Education. He taught music for a period of time in both the Lewistown and Altoona School districts also in Pennsylvania.
He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Bradenton, FL.
A decorated war veteran, he served during WWII with the United States Army Air Corp and reached the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged with the American Theater Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and ultimately the WWII Victory Medal. He was stationed at Bolling Air Force Base and was proud to be a member of the official Air Force Band whose mission it was to provide worldwide flagship ceremonial and musical ambassadorship, as well as comprehensive wartime base operating support to all assigned Air Force organizations and their personnel.
His first wife the former Myrtle Thomas passed away in 1982.
He is survived by his wife, Caroline Smith, Bradenton, FL., one daughter Deana Grandy and her husband Leonard O. Grandy, Sharpsville, three grandchildren, Leonard D. Grandy and his wife Darla, Melissa A. Sager and her husband Donald, and Richard L. Grandy and his wife Dawn, five grandchildren, Jared, Kaitlyn, and Jenna Grandy, Emily and Ericka Grandy.
He was preceded in death by his two sisters and two brothers.

Calling hours: At Richard's request, there will be no calling hours.
Services: a private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
Interment: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage. Arrangements by the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory 1090 E. State Street, Sharon.
