Calling hours and a funeral service will be held on Wednesday for Richard A. Middleswarth Sr., Hermitage Pa., formerly of Midland Ave., York, Pa., who passed away peacefully of natural causes at 12:26 a.m. on Sunday (1-30-11) in UPMC Horizon Hospital, Greenville. He was 91.
Richard was born in Yeagertown, Pa., on September 26, 1919 the son of Edward and Maude McIlvaine Middleswarth.
He graduated from Yeagertown High School in Mifflin County.
A decorated veteran of WWII, he served with the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1945 with the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with one Bronze Star. He also was a Bandsman while in the Army and was a member of the US Military Band. As an accomplished trombone player, He was a proud member of the well known Spring Garden Band in York, Pennsylvania for more than fifty years.
He was employed as a photo engraver and etcher at Horn Crone Horn Inc. (a printing plate company) from 1946 until his retirement in 1989. In his retirement years, he worked for Weis Markets, York.
Some of his memberships included the American Legion, Red Lion Post # 543, the American Federation of Musicians, and he was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Richard and his wife the former Evelyn Close were very happily married for 67+ years. In 1999 they relocated to Hermitage to be closer to their family and grandchildren. He always enjoyed attending birthday parties and events of his great grandchildren. Richard thoroughly enjoyed all sports and was an avid Penn State Football fan.
He is also survived by his daughter, Carol Ann Connelly and her husband John, Sharon, a son Richard A. Middleswarth II, Las Vegas NV; a brother James Middleswarth, Lantana Fl; his 4 grandchildren, Christopher M. Connelly and his wife Lisa, and Patrick J. Connelly and his wife Jackie, all of Sharon, Erica A. Connelly of Tahoe City, California, Kimberly Middleswarth, Seattle, Washington; five great grandchildren, Lydia, Isaac, Ella, Grace and Ian Connelly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Miriam Knode, and a brother Charles Middleswarth.

Services: Funeral service will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday (2-2-11) in the funeral home chapel with Rev. C. Charles Eckles, pastor of I H S Gospel Ministries, Hermitage, officiating. Full military honors will be rendered.
