Obituary

Richard J. "Rick" Burns of Sharpsville passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, May 8, 2018, in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was 69.

Mr. Burns was born August 29, 1948, to James Burns and Elizabeth "Betty" (Edell) Burns Terpack. A lifelong resident of Sharpsville, he graduated from Sharpsville High School in 1966.

Rick was employed by the former Kroger's Grocery Store, Hermitage, as an inventory clerk, later becoming a store manager. He then worked as a manager at the former Golden Dawn Grocery, also Hermitage. For the last 20 years, Rick was the maintenance supervisor and building manager of the Trailblazer Apartment Building, Sharpsville.

He was a member of St. Bartholomew's Church, Sharpsville.

Rick was also an active member and past commander of the Son's of the American Legion, Sharpsville.

He had a lifelong passion for sports and for more than 35 years coached various youth sports teams in Sharpsville. Rick was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, all Cleveland sports teams, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He loved attending the Cleveland Indians' opening day with his with his three brothers, a tradition they kept for many years. He also enjoyed Ford Mustangs, owning three of them throughout his life.


Above all else, Rick loved his family and cherished the time spent with them, especially his grandchildren.


Surviving are: his wife, the former Susan "Sue" Jones, whom he married August 26, 2000; two daughters, Rachal (Jeff) Myers, S. Pymatuning Twp., Staci (Shawn) Taylor, Atlanta, GA, and a step daughter, Erin Phibbs and her fiancé, Steven Batemon, Sharpsville; a step son, Joseph (Corrine) Kuzmanko, Hermitage; his step father, Charles Terpack, whom raised Rick as his own son, Sharpsville; three brothers, Jim (Renita) Burns and Jeff (Dawn) Burns, all of Sharpsville, and Tim (Lori) Terpack, Sharon; nine grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.


Rick was preceded in death by his mother and a nephew, Andrew M. Burns.


Calling hours will be 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday (5-13-18) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St ., Sharon.


Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday (5-14-18) at St. Bartholomew Church, 311 W Ridge Ave, Sharpsville , with Rev. Matthew Strickenberger, pastor, as celebrant.


Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
