Obituary

Reba M. Bender, 90, of 3349 Wilmington Road, formerly of Jordon Road, Volant, passed away at 5:45 p.m. Saturday (3/26/2011) in the Jameson Care Center.

Reba was born July 25, 1920 in New Castle the daughter of Samuel Arthur and Florence Allora McCormick McCreary.

She was a 1938 alumna of Eastbrook High School and earned her B.S. in Education in 1962 from the former Slippery Rock State College. She received her Masters degree in Guidance Counseling from Westminster College.Mrs.

Bender began her career as an educator at the former Eastbrook Elementary School where she taught sixth grade for five years. After her graduation from Westminster, she became a guidance counselor at Laurel Senior High School for 22 years, retiring in 1989.

She was a member of the Eastbrook Presbyterian Church. She was an active and retired member of the NEA, the PSEA, and the Lawrence County Retired Teachers Association. She was a volunteer with the former Contact EARS, Hospice of St. Francis, and the Lawrence County Crisis Center.

Her husband, George Bender, whom she married August 23, 1942, passed away January 12, 2004.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda and Charles Morrison, New Castle and Beverly and James T. Pennington, Volant; one sister, Ann McCreary Nager, Daphne, AL; five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Howdershelt.

There are no calling hours planned. A memorial service will be held at a later date with the time and day to be announced. Internment will be in Oak Park Cemetery.
