Raymond L. "PeeWee" Phillips of Canfield, formerly a longtime resident of Sharon, passed away peacefully at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 7, 2017, in Canfield Place Assisted Living, Youngstown. He was 90.

Mr. Phillips was born February 26, 1927, in Sharon, a son of Leslie J. and Mary E. Anderson Phillips. He attended Sharon Schools and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January of 1945. Raymond served as an armed guard stationed throughout the Pacific Theatre during WWII.

Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Sharon and married his wife of over 50 years, the former Suszanna M. Walker, on October 15, 1946, and she passed away July 4, 1997.

Raymond retired in 1985 from the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., after more than 40 years of service. He began his career as a laborer and retired as supervisor, ultimately serving as a consultant after the plants closing. Raymond remained active in the International Union of Electric Workers (IUEW) and served in several capacities through the years, including: Local President; Vice President; and Chief Plant Steward.

He was a former member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Hermitage.

Raymond was a member of the American Legion, Post 299, VFW, Post 1338, Apollo Maennerchor Club and American Carpo-Russ Club, all Sharon.

He enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing fast-pitch softball in the former Westinghouse Softball League and cheering for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Raymond loved his family and cherished the time he spent with them.

Surviving are: two daughters, Linda Perrine; and Terrie Hannay, both Canfield, OH; a son, Gary R. Phillips and his wife Debra, Mercer; a son-in-law, Rolland A. Hannay, Salem, OH; a brother, Thomas E. Phillips and his wife Linda, Sharon; five grandchildren, Brynn (Jeff) Hannay-Steckman; Erin (Nathan) Hannay-Hughes; Bethany (Jason) Phillips-Applegarth; and Brad (Tanya) Phillips; Evan Hannay and seven great grandchildren whom he adored and whom affectionately called him, "PeePaw."

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Raymond W. Phillips; three sisters, infants Dolores Jane and Donna Jean Phillips and Margie (Hank) Smith; and two brothers, James E. "Ted" Phillips and Walter L. Phillips, Sr. He also had a special place in his heart for his three Doxies; Heidi, Oscar and Mayer.

The family would like to thank Dr. S. Ricciardi for the wonderful care he provided Raymond over the years. Additionally they would like to thank all of the staff at Canfield Place Assisted Living and All Caring Hospice for the exceptional care and compassion they have shown Ray during his illness.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday ( 4-10-17 ) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday ( 4-11-17 ), in the funeral home, with Rev.  David Williamson, pastor of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Hermitage, officiating.

Military honors will be conducted by members of the Sharon American Legion, Post 299, at St. Rose Cemetery Chapel, Hermitage.

Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
