Raymond Louis Norris, 93, formerly of West State Street, passed away at 5:20 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, in Avalon Nursing Center. Mr. Norris was born Dec. 19, 1921, in Coudersport, Pa. He was a son of John and Marcella Marcellen Norris. He moved to New Castle as a young boy and was a 1939 graduate of Union High School. A decorated war veteran, he served with the Navy as a radar man aboard the USS Ashland during World War II. He was the recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with nine battle stars; the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two battle stars; the American Campaign Ribbon; and the Victory Ribbon. Following his discharge, he served five years in the Reserves at the Navy Reserve Center, Youngstown, Ohio. Ray was employed for 26 years at National Steel Corp. in production control and retired in 1983. He was a member of Mary, Mother of Hope Parish, St. Mary Church. He belonged to the American Legion, Post 343, New Castle, and Post 638, Falconer, N.Y.; the USS Biloxi (CL-80) Association; the Croatian Club, Bessemer; the K Pulaski Club and its golf league; and the AARP. His wife, the former Nora E. McLaughlin, whom he married April 10, 1953, passed away Nov. 22, 1985. Surviving are two daughters, Rae Anne Sprague and her husband, Mark, of Hinckley, Ohio, and Mary M. McNulty of Columbus; two sons, John R. Norris and his wife, Cheryl, of New Castle and Martin Norris, Las Vegas; and four grandchildren, Daniel and Emma Norris, and Sean and Katie McNulty. Besides his wife, Ray was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Edith Gibson. The family suggests memorial contribution be made to a charity of the donor's choice. At Ray's request, there will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, in St. Mary Church. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery.
