Obituary

Phyllis D'Eletto Weir, 97, died in the early afternoon of Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at her daughter's home in Mission Viejo, Calif. Her death was peaceful, though she had endured a long struggle with a heart condition. She was born Sept. 29, 1915, to the late Angelina Moné and Ermenegildo D'Eletto, the third child born to the couple. Angelina was a native of New Castle, while Ermenegildo emigrated from Abruzzo, Italy. Phyllis was a graduate of New Castle High School, and attended the New Castle Business College. In 1935, she married her first husband, Martin Simone, whom she met while visiting cousins in Steubenville, Ohio. Their only child, daughter Cynthia Simone, was born in New Castle in 1938. Following World War II, after Martin returned from serving in the European theater, the couple separated and divorced in 1947. For many years, Phyllis worked in retail sales, especially enjoying her time with the popular department store Strouss-Hirshberg. She also was a cashier at Joseph's Supermarket. Phyllis became Mrs. Russell Weir in 1964, and together, Phyllis and Russell enjoyed 30 years together before Russell's death in 1994. Phyllis lived a full life, as a mother and homemaker, with an abiding interest in her hometown, her upbringing in the Italian-American community, her immersion in politics and love of travel to visit family in California and Texas. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia; her sister, Madeline Sherrill and niece, Lynda Hicks, now of Shreveport, La.; a brother-in-law, Carl Elder of New Wilmington; and many nieces and nephews in the Weir and Elder families who have been so caring over the years. Phyllis was predeceased by her brother, Guy D'Eletto. At her request, there will be no funeral service. Burial will be in Castle View Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospicetouch, Suite 100, 3401 W. Sunflower, Santa Ana, Calif. 92704; or to the hospice of your choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, 111 W. Falls St.
