Obituary

A funeral service will be held Saturday for Phyllis L. Bonner of Hermitage. She passed away peacefully with family by her side at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 80. Mrs. Bonner was born Dec. 28, 1932, in Sharon, a daughter of John P. and Grace M. Hassell Sherrod. She was a lifelong area resident and a 1950 alumna of Hickory High School, Hermitage. Prior to raising her family, Phyllis was employed at the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant. She later worked part-time for Hermitage School District. A homemaker, she was an active lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Sharon. She enjoyed crafts, gardening, traveling and her flowers. Phyllis was active in the community and belonged to many organizations throughout her life, many in which she had leadership roles. She was a member and past matron of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 242; and White Shrine of Jerusalem Shrine 8, both Sharon. She belonged to the Classy Ladies Red Hat Society, for which she was queen mother; the West Middlesex Woman's Club; AARP Shenango Valley Chapter 3775; the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage; and was a member of the former Hickory Women's Club. She also attended the Salvation Army and Hermitage Senior centers. Phyllis was always willing to volunteer and lend a helping hand and will be remembered for her kind and caring demeanor. Her husband, Doyle D. Bonner, whom she married July 17, 1954, passed away unexpectedly Aug. 17, 1988. Surviving are two daughters, Marcia L. Thompson and her husband Jeffrey, Hermitage; and Gail M. Madasz and her husband Dean, Pulaski Township, Lawrence County; a son, Gary A. Bonner and his wife Bonnie, Poland, Ohio; and four grandchildren, Adam Bonner and his wife Rachel, Smyrna, Ga.; Matthew Bonner, San Antonio; Amanda Thompson, Denver; and Kristin Thompson, Pittsburgh. Besides her husband, Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church, 301 W. State St., Sharon, PA 16146. Calling hours: 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today (3-1-13) in J. BRADLEY McGONIGLE FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORY Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon, with a memorial service at 3:45 p.m. in the funeral home by Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 242, Sharon. Service: Funeral service at 1 p.m. Saturday (3-2-13) in First Baptist Church, Sharon, with the Rev. John M. Trojak, pastor, officiating. Interment: Private in Oakwood Cemetery, Hermitage
