Obituary

Paul Bernard Holodnak, age 86, of Masury, Ohio passed away Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015, in St. Joseph Hospital, Warren, Ohio. He was born Jan. 16, 1929, in Farrell, Pa., the second son of John Holodnak and Anna (Lenart) Holodnak. He graduated from Farrell High School and attended The Pennsylvania State University where he trained as a mechanical engineer. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and attended school in San Diego, Calif. He was a member of the Staff Commander Amphibious Forces, Pacific Fleet, and attained the rank of yeoman second class. He was honorably discharged in 1949. He was employed by Consolidated Comstock Co. in Warren, Ohio, as a construction engineer; Venetta Engineering in Warren, Ohio, as a project coordinator; Herr-Voss Corp. in Warren, Ohio, as a senior engineering technician, and Dragus, Warren, Ohio, as a senior engineering technician. He retired in 1983. Paul was an avid reader and gardener and enjoyed cheering on his favorite Pittsburgh sports teams. He liked cooking some of the traditional Slovak recipes passed down by his mother. He was a loving and caring son for his parents and ensured that his sister obtained proper medical treatment for serious illnesses. He enjoyed spending time with his extended family. In his later years, as a resident of John XXIII Home, he helped to form a bocce league. He was a member of Jednota Sokols at the Slovak Home in Farrell, Pa. He was a faithful member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Farrell, Pa., before joining St. Bernadette's Catholic Church in Masury, Ohio. Paul was truly loved by all and will be missed. He was preceded in death by his brother, John, and his parents. He is survived by his sister, Marianne (Holodnak) Schuster and her husband John, Masury, and nieces Cynthia (Schuster) Eakin; Joneen Schuster and Melissa (Holodnak) Miller; and nephews Larry Holodnak, Michael Holodnak, Robert Holodnak and many great nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, August 9, 2015, in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon. Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, 2015, in St. Bernadette's Catholic Church, 7800 Locust St., Masury, with Rev. John Lody, former pastor, as celebrant. Everyone is asked to go directly to the church on Monday. Internment: St. Ann's Cemetery, Hermitage, Pa. Memorial contributions should be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
