Obituary

Paul Bogdan of Sharon, passed away peacefully at 12:46 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2013, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 93. Mr. Bogdan was born July 6, 1919, in Farrell, a son of Vasil and Barbara Babaj Bogdan. He died the loving husband of Mildred Krichko Bogdan and devoted father of sons Dennis, Douglas and Larry Bogdan. Mr. Bogdan grew up on Spearman Avenue in Farrell along with his family of 10 brothers and sisters. He graduated in 1938 from Farrell Senior High School. Following high school, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in northwestern Pennsylvania. During World War II, Mr. Bogdan, medically restricted from active duty, worked as an inspector in local factories, building torpedoes for the Navy. Later, he was employed at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., retiring after 34 years. During those years with Westinghouse, Mr. Bogdan held positions as a group leader, union steward and industrial engineer. Mr. Bogdan considered himself a lifelong learner and, up to the time of his death, enjoyed exploring information searches and taking numerous online college courses in economics, philosophy, psychology and business. He frequently enjoyed "active" discussions with his children and grandchildren about politics, science, and his enormous pride in what the United States stood for. As a devoted voter and a Democrat, Mr. Bogdan took special pleasure in presidential elections, receiving letters from Presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush and, more recently, Barack Obama. Besides the company of his wife, Mr. Bogdan's greatest pleasure was his children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He valued greatly participating in their lives through e-mails and weekly telephone calls from around the country and, at times, around the world. They frequently found encouragement, insight, direction and comfort from their many hours of contact with him. He was always willing to share his knowledge, understanding and life lessons. Mr. Bogdan believed in "... setting an example that will make your family proud and respecting the guidance of those who made it possible." Mr. Bogdan was married Feb. 24, 1943, in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Sharon, now Hermitage, by the Rev. John Zabadal to "the love of his life," Mildred Louise Krichko Bogdan, who survives him. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Also surviving him are his sons, Dr. Dennis Bogdan with his wife Joanne, Pittsburgh; Dr. Douglas Bogdan with his wife Carole, New Castle; and Larry Bogdan, Sharon. In addition, Mr. Bogdan is survived by grandchildren, Blair Bogdan with his wife Jolene, and great-grandsons, Parker and Cooper, all Pittsburgh; Robert Bogdan with his wife Tammy and great-grandchildren, Julia and Alexander, all Marietta, Ga.; Sander Bogdan, Dublin, Calif.; Hillary Bogdan; and Dennis Brunner with his wife Dana, all Pittsburgh; and Amy Amore with her husband Kelly, and greatgranddaughter Ashley, all Colorado. Also surviving him are innumerable nieces and nephews. Mr. Bogdan was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Anna Skody, Mary Hardy and Julia Fanelli; and seven brothers, Michael, Nicholas, George, John, Andrew, Alexander and Robert Bogdan; a niece, Martha Ann Hardy; and a grandson, Andrew Bogdan. For 87 of his 93 years, Mr. Bogdan fought a courageous battle with osteomyelitis, enduring more than 50 hospitalizations and countless surgeries. Mr. Bogdan and his family extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, technicians and staff at Cleveland Clinic and Sharon Regional Health System for providing him with the very best care possible throughout his life.
