Paul Martin
Alongi
February 17, 1925 – April 19, 2018
Paul Martin Alongi, Sr. of Hermitage passed away peacefully Thursday morning, April 19, 2018, in St. John XXIII Home. He was 93.
Mr. Alongi was born February 17, 1925, in Sharon, to Charles and Catherine (Giardino) Alongi. He was a lifelong area resident and a 1943 graduate of Farrell High School.
His wife, the former Maryann Pop, whom he married November 8, 1947, passed away October 26, 2007.
A proud veteran, Paul served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and was stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C., where he fulfilled his duty as a P.O.W. prison guard.
Following his honorable discharge, he attended New Castle School of Trades and completed his carpentry training.
A longtime member of Carpenters' Local Union #420, Sharon, Paul began his career working for Kitchen Center, Hermitage, and later worked as a carpenter for Tom Shernisky Construction, Sharpsville. He retired from J. G. Hayden & Sons General Contractors, Sharon, where he worked as a carpenter for many years, as well as completing many construction projects of his own.
Paul participated in many golf and bowling leagues throughout the years and particularly enjoyed the Sunday Mixed Couples League with his wife Maryann at Thorton Hall, Sharon.
He had a talent for fixing or building just about anything, and often spent many hours in his garage "tinkering" on little projects.
Above all else, Paul loved to spend time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.
Surviving are: a daughter, Denise Tomko and her husband Paul; a son, Paul M. Alongi, Jr. and his wife Marcia; all Hermitage; four grandchildren, Michael (Natalie) Tomko and Leslie Tomko; and Natalie (Matt) Shaffer and Julie (Tim) Burns; and five great grandchildren, Jackson and Owen Shaffer; and Ava, Brayden and Lucas Burns.
In addition to his wife, Paul was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, Irene Curcio, Catherine DiBlasi, Josephine Magnotto, Frances Veign and Mary Burlingame; and a brother, Joseph Alongi.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Butler Veteran Affairs Hospital; online donations may be made at: https://www.butler.va.gov/giving/; or St. John XXIII Home, 2250 Shenango Valley Freeway, Hermitage, PA 16148.
