Patrick Joseph Fitzgerald, 334 3rd St., New Cumberland, PA; formerly of Sharon, passed away at 5:19 a.m. Monday, November 24, 2008, in Harrisburg (PA) Hospital. Pat battled cancer for two years, however died of a stroke. He was 59.
Pat was born March 16, 1949 in Sharon a son of John Francis Fitzgerald and Mary Regina Kahl Fitzgerald.
He attended St. Joseph Parochial Grade School; was a 1967 graduate of Sharon High School; and received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Clarion (PA) State University.
Following college, Pat taught 9th grade for one year in Salisbury, Maryland and then returned to Sharon and was a substitute teacher at St. Joseph's School. Subsequently, he began working as a disability claims adjudicator with the Bureau of Disability Determination in Harrisburg, PA, and retired on January 1, 2008, with more than thirty years of service.
Pat was a former member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon, and attended Spanish language Mass' in Harrisburg. Although he never married, Pat lived a full life and traveled frequently and extensively in Europe and Mexico. He had a deep appreciation and understanding of many diverse cultures. He pursued numerous hobbies, including needlepoint and pottery making, which he did for many years at 3rd Street Pottery in Harrisburg. Pat was an avid reader, a gourmet cook and loved the theater and cinematic arts.
Pat's spirit was very gentle and tolerant, however he was fiercely independent. He was deeply loved by his family, co-workers and friends.
Surviving are: two sisters, Mary Ellen Hando and her husband John, Sharon; and Susan Theresa Pappajohn and her husband Jim, Morgantown, West Virginia; three brothers, Francis "Nick" Fitzgerald and Dennis "Pete" Fitzgerald and his wife Lynne, all Sharon; and Gerald "Jerry" Fitzgerald and his wife Elaine, Ridgewood, NJ; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
Calling hours will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, November 28, 2008, in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, November 29, 2008, in St. Joseph Church, corner of Case Ave. and E. State St., Sharon, with the Rev. Glenn R. Whitman, pastor, as celebrant.
Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
