Obituary

Mrs. Patricia R. Allen, formerly of Hermitage, PA passed away at 8:52 AM Thursday (7-23-15) at St. Anne's Retirement Community near York, PA with her family at her side. She was 86. Patricia Ruth Rome was born on July 13, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan, to Harry and Josephine Gunther Rome. She married Robert W. Allen in Detroit in 1954. They had nine children. Patricia graduated from Detroit's Pershing High School in 1947 and worked to save money to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. The first member of her family to go to college, Patricia graduated from Wayne University in Detroit with a degree in elementary education. While there, she was president of her sorority, representing it on the Panhellenic Council. In 1952 she received the Howard A. Donnelly Annual Honor Award for service and scholarship. She taught first grade at Ferry School in Detroit for three years, until the birth of her first child. After moving with her family to Sharon in 1962, Pat became a member of the College Club, volunteered as a reading tutor at St. Joseph, Notre Dame, and St. Anthony Schools, and was an active member of the Sharon General Hospital Auxiliary. She was also active in her church. Patricia Allen served as a Eucharistic Minister at Notre Dame Church. She also served on the Parish Council and for many years as the organizer of Notre Dame's bridge league. She was a longtime member of the Mercer County Serra Club, an organization that encourages vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Patricia was an avid bridge player and a proponent of education and music, but her greatest enthusiasm was her children. She was a generous and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and in recent years was delighted by her youngest granddaughters and great-grandchildren. Patricia R. Allen was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Allen, her parents, by two children, Thomas Edward and Ruthanne Margaret, and by a granddaughter, Jill Anne Allen. She is survived by her children Susan Allen and John R. Ford, of Cleveland, Mississippi, Michael H. and Mary Sabol Allen of York, Pennsylvania, Robert D. and Fumiko Ishihara Allen of San Jose, California, John P. Allen of Norman, OK, William R. and Susan Sabol Allen of North Royalton, Ohio, the Very Rev. Richard J. Allen of St. Mary's, Pennsylvania, and Mary Elizabeth and Jose F.
