Obituary

Matthew S. Szuba, 124 Kenneth Ave., New Castle Pa. passed away at 5:40 p.m. on Sunday (3-6-11) in Jameson Hospital following a brief illness. He was 90.

He was born on April 23, 1920 in New Castle the son of John and Julia Osak Szuba.

A lifelong area resident, he attended New Castle schools.

He was retired from Conrail in Conway Pennsylvania where he had worked as a rail car inspector and retired in 1981. In his retirement he was a familiar face at the YMCA in New Castle where he assisted for 30 years.

He was a member of St. Camillus Church. Mr. Szuba was a member of the Casimir Pulaski Club, and the W. Jagielly Society. He also belonged to the New Castle American Legion Post 343, New Castle. In his spare time he simply enjoyed having lunch with his friends at local restaurants and sharing good conversations. He was a Hockey fan and loved his Pittsburgh Penguins.

A decorated war veteran, he served with the United States Army and was honorably discharged on June 30 1945 with the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Medal, 4 oversea Service Bars, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with 1 Silver Service Star.

His first wife, the former Mildred Colletta Donegan whom he married on July 4th, 1949, passed away on December 25, 1957. His second wife of 38 years, the former Maryagnes Schetrom whom he married on May 9, 1959, passed away on February 15, 1997.

He is survived by his two daughters, Luann Saunders and her husband Melvin, Auburn, Washington, and Marybeth Shearer and her husband Jason of York Haven, Pa. six grandchildren, Lauren and Matthew Saunders, Joshua, Colin, and Lindsay Shearer, and Catie Szuba, one sister Frances Baranski, and one sister in law, Joan M. Szuba, both of New Castle.

In addition to his two wives', he was preceded in death by his son Raymond M. Szuba on November 10, 1996, and his brother Stanley Szuba Sr.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to St .Camillus Church, 324 West Englewood Avenue New Castle, PA 16105.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday (3-9-11) and from 12 to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday (3-10-11) in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. 111 W. Falls Street, New Castle.

Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday (3-10-11) at 1:00 p.m. in St. Camillus Church with Rev. Thomas Lewandowski, pastor as the celebrant.

Military honors will be provided by the New Castle Honor Guard immediately following the committal prayers in St. Joseph's Cemetery, New Castle.
