Mary E. 'Tootsie' Scarmack, 1047 Fruit Ave., Farrell, passed away at 4 p.m. Sunday (5-23-10) in her residence following a brief illness. She was 74.
Mrs. Scarmack was born April 14, 1936 in Farrell the oldest child of the late Fred P. and Kathryn Skubich Ruffo.
A lifelong area resident she was a 1953 graduate of Farrell High School. During high school she was employed at the former G.C. Murphy Co. in Farrell and, following her graduation, she worked for a year at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. Mary was a homemaker and a lifelong active member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell.
She was an accomplished pianist and organist and when she was young played recitals for Tony Butala. Mary worked as a Judge of Elections in Farrell for more than ten years and enjoyed playing BINGO. In her youth she loved to go to her family's camp in Elk County, PA.
Her greatest joy, however, was the time she shared with her family, particularly her grandchildren. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother she is survived by: her husband of nearly 54 years, Nicholas J. Scarmack, whom she married Nov. 24, 1956 in Our Lady of Fatima Church with the late Rev. Joseph Ciaola as celebrant; three daughters, Tina Marie Scarmack, at home; Julie Ann Mesaros and her husband George, Sharon; and Paula Lynn Boyle and her husband Leo, Reynoldsburg, Ohio; three sons, Patsy Fred Scarmack and his wife Kathryn, Pataskala, Ohio; Mark J. Scarmack, M.D., Logan, Ohio; and Joseph A. Scarmack and his wife Amanda, Sharon; six grandchildren, Sammi Jo and Joe Mesaros; and James P., Rachael, Stephen and Jessica Scarmack; three great grandchildren, David, Madea and Sebastian Mesaros; two sisters, Cathy Bedich and her husband Walt, Transfer; and Peggy Jean Cassidy and her husband Larry, Hermitage; two brothers, Raymond Ruffo and his wife Barbara, Tuscaloosa, Alabama; and!
Fred Ruffo and his wife Pam, Sharon; several nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, Rick Wiercinski, Mercer; and two aunts, Mary Bain, Warren, Ohio; and Pauline Chestnut, Sharon.
Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by a son, Nicholas J. Scarmack, Jr.; a daughter, Kathryn Mary Scarmack; and a sister, Frederica Wiercinski.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday (5-27-10) in Our Lady of Fatima ?St. Ann's Church, Roemer Blvd., Farrell, with the Rev. Donald E. Berdis, pastor, as celebrant.
