Obituary
Mary E. Ryan, 96, formerly of Elizabeth St., New Castle passed away at 3:28 p.m. Wednesday, October 5, 2016, in Golden Hill Nursing Home.
Mrs. Ryan was born in Baden, PA on March 17, 1920, the daughter of the late Frank and Dorothy Toplak.
Mary was a member of the first female graduating class of Mt. Gallitzin Academy, Baden, PA in 1938, and graduated from St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing, Pittsburgh in 1941.
She was employed for more than 20 years as a registered nurse at St. Francis Hospital where she worked in the Pediatric unit and also worked as a School Health Nurse. She worked as a private duty nurse at St. Francis and Jameson Hospitals. Mary enjoyed reading, traveling, cross stitching, gardening and her dogs. After retirement, Mary frequently attended daily Mass, volunteered with the Lawrence County Ombudsman for nursing homes and enjoyed getting together with other retired nurses from the hospital. Her greatest pleasure came from spending time with her family and friends.
She was a member of St. Camillus Church and its Ladies Guild.
Her husband, Daniel H. Ryan, whom she marriedDecember 22, 1945, passed away on March 28, 1962.
She is survived by: two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Wilson and her husband Robert, Cleveland, OH; and Claudia AnnKary and her husband John, New Castle; a step son, David D. Ryan, New Castle; five grandchildren, Daniel (Marika)Kary; Christopher (Amy) Kary; Jonathan (Rosie) Kary; Emily (Michael) Weber; and Carolyn (Daniel) Roach; and eight great grandchildren, Cecelia, Philip, Gracie, Lilly, Gavin, Violet, Nathan and Abby.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Ryan was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and John Toplak.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contribution be made to Jameson Hospice of Lawrence County, 1000 S. Mercer St. New Castle, PA 16101; or BoysTown, 14100 Crawford Street, Boys Town, NE 68010.
Calling hours will be 10:30 to 12:00 p.m. Saturday (10-8-16) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 111 W. Falls St. A procession will leave the funeral home at 12:15 p.m. for St. Camillus Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. by Rev. Thomas Lewandowski.
Interment will follow in Graceland Cemetery.
