Mary Nelson, 89, of Hermitage passed away June 5, 2025, after a brief illness.
Mary was born on March 18,1936, to Michael John and Mary Coyne. She graduated from Sharpsville High School in 1954 and attended Indiana State Teachers College and graduated from Youngstown State University with a degree in Home Economics Education.
She taught home economics at several area schools, including Braceville Local School, Cardinal Mooney H.S., and Greenville and Farrel High Schools. She married Harold A. Nelson in 1966, and they had two children, Casey Nelson and Ann Montgomery.
While teaching children and raising her own, she also taught sewing to adult continuing education students from across the Shenango Valley. She tirelessly volunteered her time and skills creating and tailoring hundreds of theatre costumes and wedding dresses for family and friends alike.
Family and friends both played a huge role in her life. She was the Coyne family archivist and with her sisters, they organized many wonderful family reunions over the years. Her circle of friends was filled with many like-minded ladies who loved to cook and entertain—laughing and loving their way through all of life's joys and sorrows.
She is preceded in death by her husband and sisters, Nora Ann and Patricia. She is survived by her daughter, Ann Montgomery and her husband, Don; and her son, Casey Nelson and his husband, David Ligon. She was blessed with two grandchildren, Ashley and Donovan Montgomery; and her great-granddaughter, Adaline Montgomery-Ruschell. Her family devotion, loving smile, and amazing cooking and sewing skills will never be forgotten.
