Obituary

Mary Louise Hickey Kerins, South Hermitage Road, Hermitage, passed away peacefully at 10:45 a.m. in her home surrounded by her family and friends on Thursday (8-26-10) at the age of 94.

She was born in Clarendon, PA on May 23, 1916 to John M. Hickey and Maude Russell Hickey.

Mary Lou and her husband Jack purchased Tam O'Shanter Golf Course in October 1947 shortly after they were married. She operated the golf shop and supervised the caddy program in the 1950's. She was instrumental in helping develop women's golf leagues including the Tammy Thursday Morning Ladies League which was the first women's golf league in the area. She was a great promoter of junior golf. She enjoyed golfing and had the opportunity to play Pebble Beach, Spyglass, Cypress Point, The Greenbrier, The Old Course at St. Andrews, Troon, Lahinch, and numerous other courses in Ireland.

Mrs. Kerins loved to travel with her husband and their family and took numerous trips to Scotland, Ireland , and Europe. She especially enjoyed going to Lago Mar Resort in Ft Lauderdale.

Mary Lou graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1938. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was also a member the 'First 500'. The first women who were permitted to reside on the campus at State College.

Mrs. Kerins taught Physical Education in the Farrell School District after graduation.

She met her future husband on the steps of Our of Fatima Church after Mass. They were married on October 18, 1947 and were married for 62 years.

During World War II, she served in the Red Cross and was stationed at The Greenbrier in White Sulfur Springs WV. She was in charge of caring for captured wounded German officers.

She was a founding member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in West Middlesex and a member of the Altar Rosary Society and a member of the John 23rd Ladies Auxillary.

Mary Lou and Jack always enjoyed their evenings at Chiccarino's.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jack who passed away June 26, 2009 and her daughter Mary Ann who passed on Dec 29, 2008 and her sister Kitty Henry and a nephew Michael Henry. She is survived by her brother Jack Hickey, Warren, PA and two sons, John Kerins and his wife Kimberly Patterson Kerins, Hermitage, and Richard Kerins and his wife Paula Conti Kerins, Hermitage and PonteVerda Beach FL and her grandchildren, Colleen, Christen, and Joseph. Numerous nephews and nieces including Robert Henry, Fairhaven, NJ and Kathy Ryan, Hermitage, James Henry, Carnegie, PA and Melinda Conrad, St Augustine,FL.

Granny Lou loved her grandchildren and never missed a moment of their lives.

A special thanks to all of Mary Lou's caretakers who have done a wonderful job of caring and loving her these past two years.

Services: Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday (8-30-10) at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of the Good Shepherd, West Middlesex with Rev. Robert Malene, pastor of the church, Msgr. Salvatore P. Mitchell, retired priest as concelebrants. A brief prayer service will begin at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral home prior to leaving for the church.

Ronald W. Kerr, Youngstown, Ohio; formerly a 41 year resident of Cedar Ave., Sharon, PA passed away at 5:15 a.m. Tuesday (9-28-10) in Hospice of the Valley, Poland, Ohio. He was 79.

Mr. Kerr was born March 10, 1931 in Sharon the oldest child of the late John Joseph and Juanita Grace Neff Kerr.

He was a 1950 alumnus of Sharon High School and, years ago, completed a Dale Carnegie course.

Ron was employed at Sharon Steel's former Farrell plant as a roll grinder for more than 30 years until the plants closing and moved to Youngstown in 1997.

He was a former member of East Side Church Baptist- Disciple of Christ, Sharon, where he was a committeeman. Ron was a member of TRIO (Transplant Recipients International Organization), Hermitage Chapter, and was a twenty-six year survivor of a kidney transplant.

A decorated war veteran, he served with the US Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Hickory VFW, Post 6166, Hermitage. Ron was a published writer, a poet and an exceptional artist. He loved music and was known by many for his constant whistling. He also enjoyed watching old movies and telling a good joke. Ron will be remembered as a kind, thoughtful and selfless man who always put his wife, children and grandchildren first. Simply put, he was fabulous in their eyes.

Surviving are: his wife of nearly 55 years, the former Mary Lou Paulsen, whom he married October 14, 1955 in the First Baptist Church in Sharon; three children and three grandchildren: Jan Kerr of Youngstown and her son, Jonathon Runcan and his wife Erin, Gainesville, Florida; Renee Bobonick and her husband Tom and their children Mandy and Hope; and Keith Alan Kerr and his wife Joan, Cleveland, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Ron was preceded in death by four brothers, John Richard Kerr, William Frederick Kerr, Frederick Raymond Kerr and Brian Keith Kerr who died in infancy.

The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley, 9803 Sharrott Rd., Poland, Ohio 44514.
