A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday for Mary Susanna Byers of Sharon. She passed away peacefully of natural causes at 2:38 a.m. Sunday (7-31-11) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 94.
Mrs. Byers was born Aug. 17, 1916, in New Baltimore, Pa., a daughter of Bernard and Althea Wolfhope Suttmiller.
She was educated in New Baltimore and was proud to have worked in her early years for a Pennsylvania airplane factory. Mary also enjoyed her role as a nanny for many years.
A homemaker, she belonged to St. Stanislaus Kostka-Holy Trinity Church, Sharon. Mary loved dancing, growing flowers and watching birds. More than anything, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
Her former husband, Paul Byers Sr., whom she married Feb. 4, 1946, passed away Feb. 22, 1993.
She is survived by: four daughters, Diana Roth and her husband Ernest, Hubbard; and Esther Hassel and her husband William; Ruth Miles and her husband Tom; and Jacqueline Musch and her friend Bobby DeMartinis, all Sharon; two sons, Paul Byers Jr. and his wife Dawn; and Larry Byers and his wife Cindy, all also Sharon; and 13 grandchildren, 15 stepgrandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several stepgreatgrandchildren. Mary was waiting for her fifth great-grandson, Jameson, who is expected later this month near her birthday.
In addition to her former husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Clemet, Cletus and William 'Bill'; and her sister, Ruth. She also was preceded in death by her two favorite dogs, Brandy and Peaches.
Mary's family would like to thank the kind staff, especially the nurses, at Sharon Regional Health System, and the caring people from Caregivers Plus for their compassion during their mother's final days.
In lieu of flowers, her family suggests memorial contributions be made in her memory to St. Stanislaus Kostka-Holy Trinity Church, 370 Spruce Ave., Sharon, PA 16146.
