Mary Barbara Benedict, 82, of Grove City, passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2025, in AHN Grove City Hospital.
Mrs. Benedict was born on January 27, 1943, in Youngstown, OH, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Halasz) Pusateri. Mary’s mother passed away when she was six months old and she was then raised by her maternal grandparents, Jim and Mary Lefler. She was a 1961 graduate of Boardman High School and earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Youngstown State University. Later, she earned a master’s degree from Slippery Rock University.
Mary began her career working as a teacher at West Hill Elementary School, Sharon, before taking a position as the reading specialist at George Junior Republic, Grove City, and then worked in the same capacity at Mercer Junior High School until she became a mother. When her son was young, she worked at a pre-school in Grove City and the Montessori School in Slippery Rock. Mary ultimately ended up in healthcare, beginning in Dr. Kenneth Dunkle’s office in Harrisville, until he merged into Family Healthcare Practices, which was eventually bought out by UPMC, where she remained until her retirement.
A strong Christian, Mary was a member of Center Church, Grove City, where she served as a deacon and helped organize the Christmas plays.
She enjoyed making a variety of crafts, keeping an eye on her family and friends, and going out to eat with those close to her. She was proud of her Hungarian and Sicilian roots and looked forward to attending her native festivals.
A talented singer, she sang in a choir and was part of a recording band. Above all, she had a fierce love for her family.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond Benedict, whom she married on June 5, 1965; a son, Joshua Ray Benedict and his wife, Olivia, of Grove City; six grandchildren, Desirae, Sophia and Theodore Benedict, Sawyer Eperthner, and Everette and Kenna Benedict.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents; a brother, Jimmy Lefler; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to Center Church, 333 Center Church Rd., Grove City, PA 16127.
