Mary Ann Antos, Hermitage, formerly of South Pymatuning Township, passed away peacefully at 1 a.m. Wednesday (12-7-11) in hospice care at Sharon Regional Health System. She was 88.
Mrs. Antos was born June 29, 1923, the last of 10 children born to Vincent and Laura Sadowska Augustynowicz in Sharpsburg, Pa.
After moving to Sharon, Mary Ann delighted her family, friends and teachers with her remarkable singing and tap dancing. Later, she also excelled in tennis and golf and was proud to have scored two holes-in-one at Buhl Land Golf Course (Dum-Dum). Her prowess in these and other sports earned her one of only five letters awarded to girls in her senior class by the Sharon High Sports Club.
It was at Sharon High School where she met her future husband, Steve Antos. They both graduated in 1942 as part of the school's largest graduating class ever. After Mr. Antos graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., they were married Nov. 5, 1944, in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Sharon. The couple lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., while Mr. Antos served his country in World War II. They returned to Sharon after the war and resided on Bon Air Drive until 1954, when they moved to South Pymatuning Township. During her lifetime, Mrs. Antos worked at the former A&P grocery store in downtown Sharon, where she was known to her co-workers as 'Bunny.' She also served as a bus driver for Hermitage School District. She was a certified nurse's aide and worked as a personal caregiver for a number of valley residents, the last of whom was Martha Hyde- White, with whom she shared many uproarious adventures. She loved to cook and bake and was affectionately known as 'Aunt Mi!
mi' to her large extended family and as 'MA 'Tos' by the neighborhood children who often feasted at her table. She and her husband enjoyed traveling to beach areas along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts to visit friends made during World War II, especially Capt. George Bark and his wife 'Danny' of Coconut Creek, Fla. Mrs. Antos was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed needle crafts, especially quiltmaking. Throughout her lifetime, she cherished her Polish heritage, her Catholic faith and the years she was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church; St. Bartholomew's Church, Sharpsville; and Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage. When her husband passed away, she moved to Whispering Oaks in Hermitage, where she enjoyed the comfort and fellowship of many wonderful people. She will be remembered by family and friends as having a spunky spirit, a generous heart and an unparalleled devotion to her husband.
In addition to her husband of 60 years, who passed away Dec. 10, 2004, she was preceded in death by her parents; her seven brothers, Joseph, Albert, Leo, Stanley, Anthony, Robert and Vincent August; and two sisters, Helen (Mrs. John Fill) and Laura (Mrs. John Drabick).
She is survived by: her two daughters and four sons, Stephanie, wife of Albert Szakach, Sharpsville, and their children Cheryl Szakach, East Rutherford, N.J.; and Joanne, wife of Leonard Mc- Muldren, Sharpsville, and their children, Noel, Lenore and Lucian; Laura Greene, Pittsburgh, and her children, Tyler Greene, Austin, Texas, and Hannah Greene and Emily Greene, Edinboro; Robert and Donna Antos, Fowler, their children, Tracey Antos, Cortland, and Jamie Niemi, Cortland, and her children, Hallie and Cameron; Ronald and Janet Antos, Hermitage, and their daughter Kacie, wife of Ryan Poniatowski, Reston, Va., and their daughter, Keira; Roger and Joyce Antos, Sharpsville, and their children Jeanette, wife of Chris Anderson, Pulaski, and their children, Shane, Mason and Alexandria, and Carrie, wife of Rob Hoffman, Indianapolis, Ind., and their son, Austin; and Steven and Nadine Antos, Indianapolis, and their children, Shannon and Spencer.
